Default rear shock bottoming out on larger pot holes

I have the rear original shocks on my 1997 1200 Sportster positioned on the lowest position (least amount of give). So if I increase this distance and adjust them will they NOT bottom out on larger potholes anymore?

I also noticed this happening while riding a passenger.

Hi, Johns
If your shocks are set at the lowest position for the least amount of "give"...it means that they're "pre-loaded" to the max...and if you "un-load" them (like you're describing) you'll be MORE likely to bottom-out...because there'd be more "give" to allow it to happen. Soooooo..the best & cheapest solution I can offer is don't hit big potholes...solo OR with passenger
