Default Trans, mid controls, and parts

Ok, I bought an 883 XLC last summer. Love riding it, but I would like to put mid controls on it while keeping the forward pegs as highway pegs.

I am also looking for someone that makes a 6 speed trans. I know that Baker makes one for the sporty up to 2003. I emailed Baker and they said they did not have anything for my 2008, and they are not looking to start anything currently.

Windshild or fairing. This is my first bike and I ride year round. In the cooler months I would like to keep some of the brutal wind off. Those with experience riding...Please tell me windshield or fairing.

Thanks

Hey Corndogger

Your best shot with the mid controls is to advertise on Craigslist for someone who would like to trade their mids for your forwards. The two types have their own brake cylinders so it's hard to have both forwards and mids. It's not cheap to buy the mids new so, like I said, I'd trade for some and then buy some highway pegs to go up front if you want to stretch out your legs from time to time.

As far as a 6 speed goes I think you're out of luck in finding one. I'm not really sure why you would want one anyway. Your Sporty has plenty of midrange torque so I doubt you'll ever be looking for that "just perfect rpm range". That's the real reason for having extra speeds. Rice burners need them because they have narrower power bands and have to always keep the engine in that narrow rpm range. If you're looking for more power go to a 1200 big bore kit. If you want to have your fifth gear range a little taller or shorter you can just change the rear sprocket. My last Sportster (an '87 1100) had a four speed and I never felt the need for a five speed. Your 883 is geared a little lower than the 1200 cuz the bigger engine will more easily pull the higher gearing.

For a windshield you have a lot of choices since the front end on your bike is the same as that on the narrow Dynaglides (not the wide or mid glides however). Personally I don't like to look through the windshield. I like it at least about 3" lower than your line of sight. Too short and you get blasted. Too high and you're looking through plastic although for the winter in Georgia that might not be a bad thing. Your call.

I don't know of any true full fairings for Sportsters but I've seen a Dyna with the "batwing" type fairing. I don't know if the Batwing was adapted from a bagger mount to fit the Dyna or if it was made for the Dyna to begin with. You'll have to do a little phone or internet research on the various batwing builders to find one that will fit.

Good Luck Dude

Hi Corndog
Not long ago I saw an ad in AIM from Corbin showing a Sporter bat-wing type fairing and other "bagger" stuff...might wanna check out their website.

Windsheilds nose-height allow you see over vs thru them...and still direct wind etc over-head virtually the same as a higher sheild.

Nice thing about bat-wings is that they protect your hands from cold wind too...better than just gloves.

Yeah, Corbin makes a fairing, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg. As far as a windshield, I put the H-D Quick Release Detachable Compact Windshield on my 05 XL and it hasn't come off the bike since I put it on, but I could thanks to the 4 clamp mounting system, it goes on and comes off in seconds. You still get the wind in the hair feeling but it keeps all the bugs and road projectiles away from you
