Tat...see my latest PM to you...regarding the jet-needle thing...no notches or clip on that one.

As for timing your ignition...YES...you really should IMO follow the shop manual instructions. I mean it's not really all that complicated once you get the hang of it...but,there's just too much room for misinterpretation etc here...and, the diagrams/pictures are definitely worth a thousand words, especially for anyone just starting out with all this.

As I've said many times on the forum...I really don't care for the Clymer or Haynes books after finding so many errors in them...and the difference in cost between those and a factory manual is worth it, in the long run. But if you just can't see swinging it for now...the others should be good enough for the basic things like this one and more.

Yup, just set your sights on one problem... get it fixed, then move on to the next. Seems like getting the carb dialed in first...then the ignition.

Just a little update on things....

The ignition thing is waiting on a friend of Ian's with more experience than him to check out a couple wiring issues ETC that I can't see from here and report back.

Yeah and in the meantime it's been discovered that his carb already had a Dynojet ThunderSlide kit in it (not compatible with H.D. jets/needles) which explains SOME things...but also takes us "back to square one" in that sense...just following Dynojet's googled instructions/guidelines (minor differences) for now.

bikes running at about 150degrees (got oil dipstick wit temp gage) got some black smoke when i "blip" throttle and it sounds like the carbs suckin air (studders). haven't heard from my buddy he lives a whileout in the city (philly) so son't know when the hole timming thing will be addressed. feel like i'm gettin closer, with the black smoke should i go back to the 42 needle?? mix screw doesn't seem to help.

I like your idea and looks like it would work just fine, it is only that I question ( this for H-D as well) why would anyone willfuly dump oil into top end to be burned when it is a knowen fact that burned oil becomes carbon. Just from my past of working on cars that the idea is to keep the carbon buildup to a minium. Hence finding another place for the oil to go is my coal.
I have a 2006 XLC 1200C with Stage 1 kit and the cool littel tubes that came with the SE aircleaner do a good job of sucking more oil out and dumping it in the air box. Sooooo, I'm working on a way of venting without the dumping & without costing a new bike worth of money.
