I am getting ready to tear the primary off my bike to install a bushing the dealer forgot to install when they put on the new chrome primary a couple weeks ago. What is the proper method to take it off and put it back on.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Kevin
I can't tell ya what you need to know, but I will tell ya what a lot of folks on here are going to tell you...if you can swing it and don't already have it pick up the service manual for your bike. It will give you step by step instructions on how to remove the primary and reinstall it.

i have been wanting to get the service manual, but can't swing the cost right now, took my last dime to get my bike back, money has been excessively tight here lately for some reason. Hope to get it soon, but dont really want to wait that long to get back on 2 wheels.

First of all, the primary is on the left side of the bike Sorry, couldn't resist! Probably the most important thing other than the tightening sequence is to torque them to the proper setting . If someone on the board doesn't come up with the info you need, call a dealer or an independent shop,to get the info!
You should wait for the funds and purchase the manual. My brother has a 1988 sportster and dumped it cracking the primary case. To replace it you have to remove the cluch cable and chain tensioner. He told me they had to tear into the clutch basket to do so and it can get messy if your not that good with a wrench.
Are you talking about the primary (left side) or gear case (right side)? If you mean the gear case I can probably give you some tips. I pulled mine last summer.
Hey,Kev
I agree whole-heartedly with the idea of getting a FACTORY shop manual A.S.A.P.etc. But hey, when ya ain't got one..ya ain't got one...and R&R'ing your primary cover is'nt exactly "rocket-surgery". In fact,it's JUST a cover, for the most part. The main thing is too get whatever's IN the way of it coming off OUT of the way...while remembering what went where...install & lube your new bushing, along with a new seal & gasket while you're at it...and put it all back together in the reverse order of how you took it apart.
Nothing ventured...nothing gained...and what do you have to lose other than the riding time that you're already losing.
Go for it...don't lose any sleep over the "torquing-sequence" etc in THIS case, as long as you "snug things up" evenly...and rest assured that IF you run into a snag you've got friends here...not (?) to mention the availabiliy of shop manual (sooner or later) if all else fails...
