Default Wide tire?

Has anyone done a wide tire on a rubber mount yet? Read the article a few months back on A.I.s conversion and started to price it out. When it hit the 2 grand mark I lost intrest. Looking to do a 180 tire & chain drive conversion, want it to be safe & economical if possible.

Hey Dennis

I run a 150x16 Metzeler Lasertec on the rear of my 2000 FXR4. Clears the belt/guard by about 1/4". Tighter under the fender-3/16" or so on the right side. You might get more clearance on the left with the chain conversion but the fender and swingarm still might be issues. Not all 150's and 180's are the same width. You can get the theoretical tire width off the maker's online catalogs but I've found that measuring them in person is more accurate. Then go back and measure your bike and its current tire. The tire width might change a bit once mounted on your wheel although on my bike it didn't change. The 150 is the biggest I can go on my bike.

Good Luck

I'm riding an '05 1200 custom and it's stock wih a 150 on the back. The fender and swing arm won't be a problem, the fender is 8 in. wide, with plenty of clearance. Swing arm clearance is ample also. I was wondering if anyone had done this conversion on a budget yet. The back axle is 1 inch, so I'm hoping I can use a wheel off of a newer big twin. Then the issue comes down to what spacers and sprockets do I need and where to get them.
