Question need help 883H

hey i really need some help here. got a 883H which i had upgraded to the 1200, arlen ness big sucker (which is what i feel like now), dyna ignit, and insomniac pipes (from pipedreams) and the carb was supposedly rejetted. now when the bike heats up i lose power. a friend suggested it's running to lean, pipes are turning a goldish color. should ijust get a new carb?? add baffels? i am planing on doing the cams this winter.

Sounds like you need more fuel....
Is it the stock carb?
If so, turn out the slow speed jet a half turn! (on the bottem of the carb)

Like Street sugg'd, I have No doubt you're runnin lean..

The pipes----
Add those baffles,,,, I think slip-on muffs are better than baffles..
Are they over 1.75" OD.?
If yes you're going to have a diff time getting things right..
If they are muffled & correct OD you're on your way..

Now the Ign..
If timing is not correct you're going to over-heat either from Too fast &/or too far advance or too retarded..

Carb..
Once you verify that timing is correct you can attempt proper jetting cuz timing should be Final before jetting..
If the exhaust system is OK do this..

Get you motor runnin, get out on the hi-way, yeah baby------
Ride a road you know you can run a steady 75+ and get NO tickets for about 15 minutes..
Do Not flucuate speed/Rpm's, if you have to, start over..
Look ahead for a safe spot to pull over..
Pull in (dis-engage) clutch and Shut-Down Motor at the SAME instant..
Coast Only to a stop-- Do Not down-shift or Anything,,, just coast..
Now, gloves on and with the plug wrench you brought pull both plugs..
If white you're lean.. I jet for a light-med tan..
What you've just done is take a snap-shot of the A/F mix at the Rpm you were running..
If there is a frontage road you're playing with Ace's baby cuz now you can ease home at about 2600 Rpm in the correct gear,, don't lug,, and do the same test after about 15 minutes..
That will give you an idea of the A/F at that Rpm..
After you idle into the compound have a M-L and check the plugs again, you will see what the idle A/F is..
They will almost always be the cleanest after High R's,, that's why that sequence..
Then come back and report..

And oh yeah--- get the manual..!!!!!

Have a ball

an how do i check the timing. I don't trust the guy that did the work. gota whole bunch of horror stories bout this jerk. blew a head gasket 4times, and he had it retarded for a while, just !@#$ed up everything he's touched. he couldn't even mount a damn tire in the right direction. and yes they are about 2in staight pipes. go to pipedreamz.com and check em out the "insomniac" pipes. oh boy i'm gonna have to get a 30 pack for this. got my hands full. hey thanks for all the help. i'll get back to you all and let you know what happens.

oh and the jerk stripped out the screw on the bottom of the carb, my airfilter housing. i really got it shoved in deep. these pipes were reccomended by him, if your ever in the Philly/Hatboro area avoid bikes buitl better.

Hi Tat

Gee, I didn't see that you replied or I'da replied sooner..

I'm not sure which screw it is that the guy stripped, will you be able to fix it.?
Will you be able to re-jet it correctly.?
And which carb is it anyway,, the stock CV.?????

OK,, I would strongly advise you to change the pipes.. Those big OD pipes on a 74" motor is just plain wrong.. And it will be even more diff to jet properly..
I know it's an exspense but over 1.75" OD is Never recommended for hardly anything.. I realize some guys do run them on very large motors but as a "for instance",,,,, I run 1.75" OD exhaust on our 120" and 127" motors..

Just get some "take-offs" from almost any shop that has taken off OEM exhaust for some other guy that wanted new after-market pipes..
OR some cheap OEM type headers and add some slip-on muffs,,,, I really do think you'll be happier..

About the timing---- perhaps Ace or Wright or ShovelMike can tell you if MY method of timing will work for your Sportster,, I see no reason why not but lets double check..
Here is a link to a thread where I posted My method of timing--- you'll find it at the Last post (2nd page) in that thread..

yo no problem, there's a shop with a Dyno and i think i'm gonna take it to him, and i was wrong they are 1.75 OD. and it is a stock CV carb, the stripped (one of many)bolt is on the bowl on the bottom of the carb. yead i can fix. i do still have my old cycle shack pipes. so if it's not possible to tune it right with the pipes i got now with adding baffels then i'll have to go back to the cycle shack's this f!@#in shops a joke i'm just gatherin info for court now. he put wrong handlebars on it( i returned them last year, didn't like them) looked up the part number and wow it's the same as the one i returned, scrated strut cover, didi't tighten my mirrors, scrated new inspection cover, put clutch together wrong. do i need to go on? you get the idea. i will check out the link and maybe i'll give it a whirl first. hey thanks to eveyone for all the help. and i'm trying to fill my hands SOB.
