hope someone can help! while riding had a loud pop sounded like an old ballast resister popping, bike dided checked coil it was shot, replaced coil, plugs, and wires. ran fine for about 100miles then poped again, bike would restart and run abuot 10-15 miles then pop and die again had harley dealer check it out they replaced fuses under seat for 100.00 bucks! ran fine for 200-300miles now poping and dying again. i have checked the wiring and all connections are tight. its driving me up the wall!!!
Which bike? Center console ignition switch? Pop or a backfire? A bad ignition switch will do that. Did new coil crap out too? If it did then probably not the switch. Electrical is tough. Im steering towards the ignition switch which you can easily bypass and see if it happens again. Im no ace electrical guy but my buddy's Heritage had same symptoms on several occsaions. Always seemed to be the switch. just a guess. Botz
Only thing I could add, is control module. They'll run great, 'til it(the control module it's self) gets hot, then it'll miss and backfire 'til it cuts off. Good luck.
thanks for the input, fellas! I have not checked the ing. switch, but i did have to replace the speedo a couple of years back it caught fire, good thing i had a cold beer in my hand at the time! this is a 98 fatboy with a crane hi4 modual, hooker stepped pipes and thunderslide kit with hypercharger all installed in 2001 this is the first trouble l"ve had. dave.
Fatboy does have center console ignition switch I think. They are notorious for bad/worn contacts. Let us know. Easy to check and doesnt cost anything. Botz
bgddy, your connections may be tight but you may want to run your fingers along the wires to check for any breaks in the insulation. Also get a multi-meter and check your voltage regulator which acts like a step down transformer. You may be getting a voltage surge which can cause some serious problems if not corrected.
no i went through the whole bike checking wires, never found any loose or cracked. next i will pull ing. mod. and regulator and have them checked.......dave
I'm curious,,, after it pops and dies,, then what..?? Does it start again right away or make you wait for awhile.? Circuit breaker?????
I tend to lean toward the ign. mod too just as 94 suggested..
I burned up 5 diff electronic ign. mods here in the hottest part of the Phoenix Valley summers.. BUT when they went (with the exception of one) they died totally,, no re-start.. The popping I heard was the popping and jerking of a dying motor.. Sound similar.??
Myt mentioned volt reg.. Could be..
I went to a Cycle Electric Inc. low voltage reg.. Seems to have helped on the remaining 2 sickles that are still running electronic ign. mods..
