Default New EVO Ultra Owner...watch out for??

Greetings all.

As of today I am the proud owner of a 1993 FLHTCU. Yea me!

High miles but a fresh rebuild on motor, new tires and such. I think I payed about right ($7500) and I feel I will be very happy with this bike. PROVIDED, nothing goes wrong.

Which is why, as soon as I got home, I came here and registered. You owners have gone thru all of the loves and losses with these bikes and you are the best resource I could think of.

I know the guy said he basicly went thru the bike top/bottom and it is gas and go. But, what are things I should look/feel for?

Having owned a 82' Honda MB5 (50cc road bike), 76' Honda CB550, 89 Kawasaki Ninja 600R and a 2000 Kawasaki Concourse...I know rice bikes well. But, being a Union rep...I had to do away with it (and the Kawa hurt the knees).

So, fill me with insite and help.

Welcome to the Jungle JackCrow! Congrats on your new sickle.

If you plan on keeping the bike for sometime get the service manual. Learn "hands on" and save a ton of dough in the long run.

I would give the bike a good looksie over. Check fastners are tight. Oil. Clutch adjusted properly. Throttle adjusted to your liking.

The old owner have doco on the maintenance and service he preformed? Did his or her garage appear in order. Tell a lot about a person by the garage.

You give it a good test ride?

The previous owner had a very clean garage: organized and spotless. All his work was done by the lead service guy/best friend at a local (to him) dealership. He said he was going to email tonight and copy me asking his friend to allow me access to those records. Said, I would be quite happy (guy was legit with everything else he said).

Will give a good going over when I put on the stock seat/tour pac. I want to know how to do it and it will give good access to the back part of bike.

I had a friend give it a good hard ride (ribbed me for it being slower then his road king) and he being 365 lbs said it was solid. Totally trust him.

Road it home and enjoyed it. Well, save for the shakes it got behind semi's. My Kawa had a frame mount instead of bar for the fairing...will have to get used to it.

Yo,Crow...welcome aboard.

Single weakest link in EVO engines is the inner cam bearing. Check with prev-owner,to see if while going thru "bottom-end" IT was R&R'd with a Torrington bearing...if not DO-IT now !!! Otherwise,just GET a factory shop-manual (forget Clymers OR Haynes) do like JC (the other one here) said...and enjoy !!!!!!

Oh..BTW..if your friend's Road King is a TC all (?) ya gotta do is to toss a "mild-cam" in yours (pretty simple)and wipe that smile off his face assuming both engines,etc, are stock now,that is !

Hey JackCrow

Time to have some fun, huh? Your Ultra is a different kind of beast from all your previous bikes. It might become your new best friend and it also comes with a ready made bunch of eager Harley type folks to hang around with. This Har-r-r-ley thang is darn near a cult (but a good cult)!

Like EvoKenEvo said, Evo's respond readily to a little massaging. More so than Twin Cams because they have free flowing heads to begin with. There were some problems with the crankcases in some of the '89 to early '93 engines but if your bike has already proven itself over time, like it has, then you're probably totally cool there.

Your engine will loosen up and gain some power as the rings seat in but your buddy's Road King is, I believe, lighter than your Ultra which accounts for his seat of the pants perception of your bike's being down a bit on power relative to his RK. It's all relative anyway, right?

I hope you have a lot of fun with your new scooter.

Spoke with previous owner: bearing all replaced throughout. No prob there. Here is the orginal ad so you know what I saw..

Took a short 30 mile trip yesterday. Had me 93 Ultra, 98 Road King Fuel Injected, 2000 Electra Glide 88. Heading down the interstate we all cracked it open at about the same time: at 75, the EG SLOWLY pulled away from me and I pulled away from the RC easily.

Must have a desent cam in there from the stage II. I sent an email out the the previous owner mechanic to get some info on exactly what they did. But, I was great to watch that smile go from his face. He complained about it being a roll on and he would walk me in town. Well, he didn't. I kept close to him the whole time (didn't know where the hell I was going..I had to!).

"HA"...don' ya jus LUV turn'n a SMUG- into a one ??

It'd be interesting to find out EXACTLY what the prev-owner's mech. did to YOUR machine,now. And,it always HELPS to know these things,as you go along,with whatever work you may want/need to be done in the future. Main thing though is it seems you got yourself a GOOD deal there. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Yeah, it would be interesting to know what he did to it. Evos respond well to even minor upgrades.

Here's a shot of my 1993 Classic other than normal wear I've not had any major problems. It's a great running bike!
Beside getting a service manual I would recommend getting a parts catalog. Harley has them for every model. It has exploded views of everything so if you end up with "extra parts" after doing some work you'll be able to see what it is. And when you go to the parts counter to order something it's a lot better if you have the part number already, saves time and you can be sure you get the right part!
