draggin:
o-sixs suggestions here are right on the money. Having your stock cam gear (press fit) R&R'd on to your new cam (correctly timed/positioned) saves a lot of un-neccesary grief & expense, etc.
You're saying that you've found the end play specs in your manual to be .0001 - .0050 which tells me that either you've got some after-market manual or you're misreading it..because according to the HD manual it should be .010-.050..and,if memory serves me Andrews reccomends .010-.020 You need a sufficient amount or end play to allow oil to get into those spaces..w/o having your cam just moving around in there too much..and like o-sixs said thrust washers are available in various sizes to adjust that gap the way he described or with a dial indicater. If you've set your end play at less than .010..NOT good !!
Did you replace your stock inner cam bearing with a new Torrington (T-138) bearing? If not that too could be the source of your problem/noises...noting that the stock bearing is prone to going away even with a stock cam and almost guaranteed to go away with anything hotter in most Evo engines.
Meanwhile, I like your idea of going with the S&S reed type breather..and will be doing that when I replace my lifters over this coming winter that have over 50-K miles on them and also seem to be one of the few weak links in Evo engines.
