Default Fxr voes

I'm asking for a buddy I work with...he picked up an '84 or '85 FXRT for his son to work on...it had caught fire and, basically, everything higher than the heads needs replacing. So far, they've picked up a lot, but they're not sure what to do about the VOES. Apparently, and I'm no expert, there are two different VOES's? One is 3in/hg and the other is 6in/hg, but we're not real sure if one is correct or if it comes down to preference. Yeah, the 3in/hg will switch at a lower vacuum, but other than that, we're stumped.
The FXR has, what appears, a stage II upgrade...any ideas or recommendations?
Thanks,
hawk

I found this link where someone is talking about a Stage II sportster and mentioned the setting for modern EVO FLH motors and explains settings for high compression vs stock compression.

MKL's Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom - Adjusting the VOES - Why, When, and How

Here is another link where adjusting VOES is discussed and a standard for FX and FL settings is mentioned.

VOES? What's That?

Until someone else on here that knows this answer replies, maybe this will give you something to think about. Be patient. Someone here will probably know the answer.

If your buds haven't got one already they should get a Harley Service manual. About $65 at the dealer and worth every penny. I also have a factory parts catalog cuz it shows how everything goes together in blow up illustrations. The manual tells how to test the V.O.E.S. and what its specs are. If they decide to pump up the motor a bit and maybe go to different ignition system they should go by the recomendations of the new system's maker. I believe the higher the vaccum rating the later the ignition advances.

Your buddy really needs to somehow determine what mods have already been done to the engine. If it does have a "stage II" engine it most likely already has an aftermarket ignition.

Good Luck

I searched E-bay and there are a couple of HD service manuals available for sale.
Harley Davidson Service Manual for 1984-1990 FLT/FXR

Harley Davidson Service Manual 1984 to 1990 FLT/FXR

Hope you get it worked out.

V.O.E.S. is vacume operated switch what it does is retards your timing before it reaches the point where your motor will detonate (ping). It has a vacume line from carb to the switch and a wire to your ignition that closes a curcuit and retards the timing.
