Default Tightening sequence 94 Dyna

Have a 94 Dyna Wideglide, just started getting a leak around the bottom of the primary (70,000 miles). I changed out the gasket and the whole bit thinking this would cure the problem. sucker leaks now worse than it did. I'm thinking my old brain has the wrong tightening sequence lodged. I have just moved and have not run across the box with the books yet. Can someone help me out on the right sequence? One other thing, any problem with using something like permatex 98H sealer (just to be sure)?

Hey Man

I didn't know there was a Specific tightening sequence for the outer cover..

I have always just started from a "Point A" and tightened in a Kitty-Corner fashion back 'n forth 'n back 'n forth a wee bit at a time until all are tight.. Heck, I have re-used the gasket on my 127" 4 times now with no sealer or leaks or probs..
I am sure you checked for debris on the mating surfaces that woulda prevented a perfect/clean fit..

Just in case you didn't know, the torque on those 1/4" x 20 bolts is no more than 9 lbs.

Heck, use sealer if think ya oughta..

Have a ball

Thanks for the help. I have never had a problem with any gasket ever except this time. I did reuse my old gasket last time and it leaked a little, so being extremely wealthy, I went to the hundred dollar store and bought a new one this time. Leaked like a mofo. So bad that it ran off my belt and left a puddle behind as well. Which kind of gave me a start. Can't see how it could run down the belt unless (O fucen gawd) it's the inner seal.

Grab an old bike mirror & a flashlight & look at the back of the inner primary up in front of the pulley, if it's wet there chances are it's not the outer gasket.
Unless there are noticeable gouges in your gasket surfaces don't put any sealant on the primary gasket.

There is a special tightning sequence. I don't have it with me. Would back them all off. Then use the exact sequence. Sometimes if gasket is wet. It will cause it to squeeze out of place. Do in sequence just snug first & keep doing sequence stepping up the "torque" each time. Good Luck.

Dyna 94,

Like Ace said check the Tranny to Primary Seals. I have a 91 Dyna and mine let loose last year. It would drip down the back of the inner and appear as though the outer primary cover was leaking. It would pool right around the primary drain plug which would also lead you to believe it was leaking from there. Good luck. Botz

While we're on the subject, and not to hijack the thread. I am having a hard time getting the derby cover to seal. I have replaced the o-ring but to no avail the problem persists. My manual does not mention torque specs. I'm not sure if I am over tightening or under tightening Any thoughts?

Bangin,

95 Lowrider? Scrap the O-ring and get the newer style derby gasket from HD (pictured below). The newer ones are much better and you can actually re-use them once or twice. If its an older bike your derby cover could be warped a bit. Take it off and lay it on a flat surface and see if it sits flush. The evo 3 bolt design tend to warp with age. The newer HD gaskets are a bit pricey but worth it in my opinion. OH, bolts dont need to be supertight. I use a T-handle, snug 'em up and then go maybe another 1/2 to 3/4 turn. Good luck. Botz

Bangin,
I agree with Botzman, but you will need a three hole derby gasket, not the 5 hole pictured above, the part # is 25416-84D
I'm willing to bet that it is warped, especially if it is not stock.
