Default electraglide wiring problem

Folks,
Had the bike on a stand most of the winter trying to do some clean-up and install an e-bay special radio. I wanted make sure everything worked before I put the fairing back on so, as a test. I supplied power from a 10 amp battery charger through the cables. When I turn on the ignition the gauges come on as they should but when you turn on the start switch the tachometer reads 3/4 scale (power on pink wire from the coil). Looking at the book, when the start switch is closed (not the start pushbutton) power should at the coil but why does it go to the tach. I've checked all grounds at the tach and the coil. Any ideas will be appreciated.

The battery charger is probably throwing you off, connect the battery & see if you still have the problem.

aceharleywrench,
You are 100% correct..... I figured the battery charger was a good idea since if there was a bad short the charger would take it but I don't think the charger had the power to collapse the field at the coil and was allowing 12 volt to come through the pink wire to the tach. I should have caught this......
Thanks for the reply.............................
