Default 85 FXR clutch

I tore the starter ring gear off my clutch basket and there is no replacement.Does anyone know which basket or kit to replace it with? I got in one wrong one already and I ain't a rich man. It's a late FXRS with a 5 speed and rear belt. Too I found a crack on the hub where it mounts on the tapered shaft right down the edge of the keyway. Am I screwed? Does anyone have a used one for sale?

There's nothing unique about FXR clutches. Finding the right size ring gear for your starter, however, might take a FXR Wizard. There're quite a few of those guys on here on the left coast. If you were here I could point you in the right direction.

As far as parts, you can check out Elvis' Place (Elvis' Place Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Parts)in California. Best source of used FXR parts on the planet. Lots of FXR's out here in Cali. For what it's worth I believe the FXR running gear is the same as FLT. The '89-'93 FXR and FLT share the same manual. Not sure about the '85.

Good Luck

Unfortunatly Elvis place didn't have any baskets or kits available. I think they ran this basket a couple years after late 85. The ring gear was very thin and inherintly weak, too I believe it was shrink fitted on so would need a machine shop to replace it so it isn't sold anywhere that I can find.
I do appreciate your trying though, thank you

Hi RI

I wish I had more for ya pal..

I checked my Manuals & catalogs and found that indeed there is some change or diff between early 85 and late 85, I couldn't see what though,, BUT the ring gear is, according to my info, still 66 teeth..

If your Hub is also in real bad shape with this crack you saw, gee man,, I am gonna guess that you might have to give up your search to replace this system and simply get a new or diff Hub and Shell that'll fit your Key-way Main-shaft..

Just for your info,, I checked my Jireh Cycles catalog and found under "Late 84 thru 89" clutch parts..
The Clutch Shell is 142.00 from them and the Hub is 73.00,, free delivery too..
And you'd be able to use all your existing clutches, etc etc..

I also looked at old-style tapered keyway main-shaft belt drives..
You know,, since you have a tapered keyway mainshaft there should be no reason you can't put on a 3-fingered hub and a 4-spd elect. belt drive unit on..
Well, it says they cannot be used on early 5-spd rear belt sickles,, I haven't done that conversion yet so I don't know why it's prohibited.. Prob something to do with the starter mech..
Maybe Shovel or Wright or Ace know the answer to that..

I thought I'd share the cheap fix with you. I bought a 66 tooth ring gear at a bike shop for $55 even though the ID was wrong. I skimmed a new clean surface on the clutch basket in a lathe and turned the ID of the new gear ..008 thousands smaller than the basket. I coated the basket with bearing lock ( glue) and heated the gear, when hot it expanded .025 and I slid it on and let it cool. It's been great ever since and only took about an hour. Thanks for all your help but it really came down to money.
