Hey Bill

That's why I sugg'd trying a "jumped-in" batt when stone cold..

Since it started easily,, It kinda appears the Batt mighta been Main the bad actor all along..

Isn't it interesting that your Deka may be the prob but since I started using Deka here in AZ I have had NO more Batt probs in this 116* summer heat..

The Deka passed all tests at the auto elec. so not guilty.
I have pulled the inner primary off to change a jack shaft seal (see my oil leak thread) and will do the frisco-rigid timing method soon as the primary's back on.

Hi Bill

Just for grins n giggles try a cold start with that Batt now that it's been Deep Cycle charged..

You're doing good chasing all your "issues" down..
This is how it's done..
Asking all the questions in the world from guys around the world is Ok,,, but when you're done it'll be your own "Hands-On" that turns the key, good man..

Hi Frisco,
I have had new and slightly bigger battery to frame, battery to solenoid and solenoid to starter cables made up. I will also do the timing as soon as I get the clutch on correctly. Then time for the cold start with or without the Dyna S but it will probably arrive before I do this!!!

frisco-rigid,
Got the bike back together this am. Installed new heavy duty wires, fixed oil leak (was jack shaft seal in inner primary) drive sprocket and seal were fine. Had a electrical drain when I hooked up the battery ( saw a small spark when connecting secong battery cable) replaced ignition switch no more drain. Had to jump bike off the car to start it. I set up to time it before putting the outer primary back on with your method. Once I got it running I checked the timing and it was miles out. There was at least two inches between the marks I put on rotor and inner primary. Set timing so marks were together and now the bike starts immediatly. I was able to lean out the mid circuit on the S&S E quite a bit too and now the bike no longer chain smokes like it's owner! Moral to this saga DO NOT GUESS THE TIMING!!!
More to report in the other threads I have going. See you there.
Cheers Bill

Hey Bill

That is soooo freakin cool bud..

You get the Gold Star for your "keep on Keepin on" attitude,, Yeah baby..

Question----

Did you do this with the new Dyna set-up or the one you had.?

Which way was the timing 2" OFF,,,,,,, Retarded or Advanced.?
I'm guessing advanced..

Hey Frisco,
The Dyna S only arrived yesterday so I am still on the Headquarters set up. Looking at the contents I can see I need to figure out how to hang the coils on a heritage and I am unsure of what to do with the springs and weight's. I have found instructions online but both of those questions are not answered there. I am assuming I will need a bracket for the coils and that the weight's set up will be obvious once I actually remove the old set up. The timing was indeed advanced an embarrising amount. I still have to replace the clutch release finger, pushrod bearing and thrust washers before I can see if the clutch issues are sorted out. Once that is all ok and I am sure it is starting reliably I will change the ignition over. I didn't really enjoy making so many changes at one time as it can be difficult to tell which is fixed from things that are still problematic. I do feel that I now have made substantial progress towards having a reliable ride again. Many thanks for all the help in this forum so far.
Cheers Bill

Hi Bill

Yes, there's no Precise way to know which one issue OR combo of issues was the hard start culprit but my best wild guess is the Batt drain at the switch & the Bad timing..
Fingers crossed........

You'll easily figger out the timing weights mech,,, but, If you want I'll send a photo..

You have 3 options with the coils set-up..

Find or order the Dyna Dual-Coil bracket at about 130.00 from most places or about 40.00 from V-Twim, diff design and bare-bones, and might need modification to fit right being from V-Twin..
OR--
If you're handy with metal, fire, and a Drill motor, you can make one,, I did, it's real simple..
Or--
Find or order a Dual-Fire timing cam rotor (the black "mushroom") and simply use a normal everyday dual-fire 5 Ohm points coil & stock bracket..
Then you only connect the front cylinder Modual,,,, the TOP one with the Black wire.. I set up my 127" that way..
You can then Save or Sell those two coils you have now,,,, whatever..

Uh, that's why I mentioned the Dual-Fire Dyna back in the beginning cuz I knew about the coils bracket expense and fitting issues,,, but wow, you got such a good deal with that unit you got it all kinda evens out..

Don't hesitate to contact------- frisco-rigid@mchsi.com

later
