Default On the TC88's Cam Problems?

I bought an 01 Soft tail early this year. It is the first what I call a new bike that I have done any time on. I rode shovel heads up till about 7 years ago. Anyway, this new motor, makes what is in my opion, alot of noise. It whines and knocks (a little under heavy throttle). I know alot of things can cause these type noises. My question is about the cam tentioner problems I have read about. Will the motor not run clean if the tentioners are wore out? I mean is there enough slack in the chain when out of adjustment to change the timming? Or will it make noise like chain slap?

The chain drive system has enough slack in it to cause cam timing to vary several degrees. Unstable timing of valvetrain could account for some of the noises. If the tensioner shoes get worn out, by the time you hear noises, severe damage will be done to the engine. Get a manual and examine them soon. You have to decide between frequent checks, changing over to the new styly roller chain & hyd. tensioners, or Gear drive for longevity.
