Default should i have my bike tuned or not???

i'm pretty new to motorcycling.i have a 2008 fat bob with just over 500 miles on it.it runs great, but i want it to be louder.i've been considering a couple different exausts.when i go to the dealer, they always say,"well, you need to put k & n air intake on it too and a power commander." and then they said that when the pc is put on,it doesn't need to be put on a dyno and tuned right away, unless i start noticing the bike run funny.my questions are 1) do i really need to get the pc and air cleaner if i just want the bike to be louder, and 2) should i get the bike tuned after i have the parts installed.i'm lookin at either getting rush 2" slip ons,or v&h 2-1 exhaust.any help with this would be greatly appreciated, and maybe i'll have the opprtunity to pass the knwoledge on to some newbie biker some day when i'm older

I don’t know if they have corrected the problem but the 07 had a real heating problems due to the new emissions standards that HD has to meet.
The heat was caused because the bikes ran so lean, plus cam timing changes.
Any time you free up the intake or exhaust it causes the bike to run leaner, this combined with a already lean condition can be a problem.
The old rule was if you changed either the exhaust or the intake you were ok, but if you changed both then you needed to reprogram.
With the new standards and the bikes running so lean, you probably going to need the power commander or the Screaming Eagle Race tuner (SERT).
And no you don’t need the K&N but it will help with the HP, and how the bike runs. While you are doing it you mise well go the whole route.
Just the SERT or Power commander is quite expensive, so yea, while I was at it I would have the bike dyno tuned.

And just take this as my personal opinion, but if you are planning on any exhaust intake cam, changes I would not wait too long to get the power commander or SERT
Both of these are emission altering devises. The CARB (California Air sumthem Bureau) and the EPA are cracking down on aftermarket devises that fool the computer to richen up the mixture on road bikes, cars. So it is just a mater of time before they are gone.
I am pretty sure power commander just had to pay a fine to CARB.
A lot of places especially in California it is getting harder to get these installed by dealerships.

I would do the air intake with the exhast as it really improves the throttle response. You will need to retune the fuel ratio as well but I would go with the Vance and Hines Fuel Pak as it is plug and play and you just enter the preset map numbers (look on their web site). I did mufflers, air intake, and fuel pak on my 07 Street Glide for $625 shipped to my door and installed myself in 1.5 hours. Bike runs much better and gets 45 to 50 mpg on the highway 2 up. I ordered all my parts from American Classic Cycle in PA and the shipping was free.

Default Tune it ?

Hey Cruiser,

Good info. I am getting ready to work on an EFI bike for the first time. I have been riding and wrenching for over 40yrs but never on efi bikes. A friend whose carb bike I did went into shock when she got the price for pipes , breather, and a sert. The final straw was being told even with the dealer doing the work the warranty would be void. She brought the bike (2008 RK) to me with the same request to just make it sound like a Harley. Since I frequently work for beer and barter I will do this in stages to see just how lean the pipes go. Knowing it is lean to begin with bothers me but I may try restricting the stock breather and see if it will go rich.

Are you going to Leesburg ? Let me know if you get down (over) to Orlando.

EFI bikes are just about the same as carb bikes except instead of changing jets you increase and decrease the length of the fuel pulses in the injectors. You can also change the timing just by plugging in different numbers. The only problem is they get expensive because you either have to buy new hardware or software to change the settings. That and doing something as little as a air cleaner change will void your warranty.

As far as changing the pipes your ecm in the 08 should compensate for the slip ons good enough but will still run lean just like it does from the factory.

I don't believe that a stage 1 will void the warranty - hasn't mine. BTW - I will be in Leesburg.

thanks for all the advice,it is much appreciated.i got to thinkin, and i called the people from dynojet/v & h, and they said that if you put a pc/fuelpak on your bike,it will not need tuned on a dyno, that the map they provide will be plenty good enough.i am going to hurry up and get the pc or fuelpak though, before the tree huggers take over the legislative branch of our gov't.thanks again everybody, much appreciated.

Wrightturn, I am not sure if I am going or not, I need to finish the molds for the bags, and repaint the bags, so have a lot to do.
You are in Lake City, right?
