What do you have in mind? What are you trying to accomplish with the mods?

I have an 06 FLSTNI and drilled out the Baffles with a 1" drill when I first bought it. Gained a little hp & torque. Gave it a little better sound also. If you don't modify the air cleaner, you can almost certainly get by with out remapping the EFI.

well buzz ,
i'd like to accomplish 2 main things well maybe three 1st i'm thinkin about better flow which should help lower the heat just a tad , 2nd ya i'd like to hear the bike alittle more and 3rd which is kinda tied to #1 better flow , meaning get a k-n air filter and open the exhaust up alittle so the machine can breath.... ive already installed the nigthrider xied's so now its time to pull the cork so to speak
i dont see any way of drilling holes from the back of the muffler due to the wonderful taper thats back there ... i havent removed the muffler from the bike yet so i'm not sure what it looks like from the input side so thats gonna be my next step ......

Replace the exhaust...don't waste your time drilling.
You'll end up with new exhaust anyhow, once you begin to make her breath.

I have heard and never likes any reworked harley muffler. Drilling them out will make them LOUDER, but they will sound like crap... I mean really crap....
I would not waste the time trying to change the stock mufflers, might even be able to sell them if not altered.
Try to find a used set of aftermarkets that fits you bike if money is an issue....

I agree, I welded a drill bit to a length of round stock and drilled out the baffles. what a mistake, it sounds not only bad....but a strange wierd whistleing sound. totaly messed up a good set of mufflers. am looking at cutting' 'em open and repairing.....another winter project. But then they wont be nice and chromed......

Hey Blues

I've drilled out a set of Sportster mufflers with a long drill bit. Well actually two bits, a 1/8" pilot hole and 3/8" final. Three holes in each muff. I liked the sound for the Sporty and the performance was up a bit but not a lot. Good sound/bad sound, that's all a matter of personal taste.

One thing to consider is that you may need those stockers to correct a ticket for excessive noise. I'd keep 'em stock and out in the garage. Get some aftermarket slip-ons either used on Craigslist or from Ebay. Half price is fair market on good used ones. Any better than that is just gravy. Guys are constantly changing out pipes looking for that elusive perfect sound. I personally know several guys with two or three sets of pipes just sitting out in their garages. I'm one of those guys. It's a common illness. I have the V&H Hotshots that came with my FXR (too loud, too low and drag in the corners) , a set of stockers for ticket clearing duty, and a new set of Cycle Shacks. I swear to God, I won't buy any more. I promise. Like I said it's an illness....

As far as what the different ones sound like you just have to keep your ears open. If you hear some on somebody else's bike you like ask them what they are. No one can accurately tell you what any particular set of pipes sound like or whether you'll like the sound yourself.

Good Luck

By the way, just putting on free-er flowing exhaust will not, in itself, make your engine run cooler. Getting your engine to run cooler is a whole 'nuther subject but worth looking into. Lots of threads here about that.
