The way many people achieve louder for no money is to drill out the baffle plates in the stock muffler. There should be a plate near the outlet and one near the inlet (which you get to by removing the muffler from the pipe) with small holes. Enlarge the existing hole or drill additional holes. I don't recommend doing this, however; Various cities are getting stricter concerning noise and you might want to save the stock mufflers back unaltered in case you get a "fix it" ticket. Another good reason is that doing your own alterations can result in a very unpleasant sounding exhaust- not at all what you'd hoped for.
Wait a little and buy some slip-on's, you'll be happier in the long run.

Another good reason is you can possibly get a free map with the slip-ons. Drilling out the existing will leave your EFM skewed and in need of a tune.

For abt $300 you can get a set of SE II slip ons. I put a set on the wife's sporty 883 then removed them when I traded it in and put them on her nightster... great sound for cheap and no map changes...
