Default My Buddy's 72 Ironhead Bobber

Thought it turned out nice. Trying to talk him into adding a tank slapper and keep the hand clutch. The air cleaner is neat but it sticks out so far you have to shift with the sole of your boot. He wouldn't win any drag races with it but it would sure look good.

I'm confused.... if the air cleaner sticks out too far... wouldnt it make braking difficult??? I thought the shifter was on the left. unless that is how the bike was built...to change things up.

just wondering???

The Ironheads started out with the shifter on the left, like the Brit bikes they were competing with. Don’t remember what year they changed but thought it was before the 72?

It's a left brake, right shift like the Brit bikes of the day. The air cleaner kind of sticks out a long way and with the forward controls, you almost have to stretch your leg out and catch the shift lever with the edge of your boot. It's got a long throw to shift so that just makes it worse.

I keep telling him to change it to a right side hand shifter and keep the left hand clutch. You'd have to take your hand off the throttle to shift, but it would be easier than what he's got now and would really look neat. I've seen a few Trumpet bobbers done that way. Some with a combo right hand clutch shift lever like this.
