Default LSR 1931 Harley Flathead

My next major project is to get a 1931 Harley-Davidson V sidevalve motorcycle running after more than 20 years of sitting neglected in a warehouse. Then I hope to take it to the Maxton Mile in October to set Land Speed Record there in its class.

Like the 1948 Panhead before this bike, I will take it to Dale Walksler at Wheels Through Time museum Wheels Through Time - Home to get it sorted out and running. Then we will work together to race prep it.

I am looking for any information or advice peple might have in how to build the engine for maximum top speed without messing up the bike or reducing the legendary longevity of these old Harley motorcycles.

I am looking for advice ad/or parts sources for better wheels (stock ws 19 inch, currently 16 inch), heads (prefer higher compression aluminum), manifold, carb and cam.

We will be following this on-line at the Classic American Iron magazine web site Classic American Iron and in in print in American Iron Magazine.

All leads and help are greatly appreciated.

Default Looking forward to it

I will be watching for that article. That's what my father rode as a young man, then sold it to go fly bombers for the Army Air Corps in WWII. All I saw of it were a couple of mediocre photos, but he always spoke of that bike with a gleam in his eye.
He always dreamed of another Harley but sacrificed for mom and us. When I was a teen we rode together a few times, but it was on very used Asian bikes, I'm living his dream and then some.
Forgive me this stroll down memory lane, it's good to remember the man who did so much for me.

Hey Buzz one week before tech at Maxton. Are you all still one and getting ready?

Should be a good deal - wish I could join you there. Perhaps one day.

Everything is a go. I am down at Wheels Through Time right now and had a great first day of working on the bike. As you might recall, this ia a 1931 Harley V flathead which has not been started or run since 1987 - 21 years.

We brought it to the museum and after a few basic checks, a new battery and some gas Dale Walksler got it running on the second kick!

We spent the entire day working on it and am comfortable this medium compression V series Harley will run strong, hard and fast at Maxton Mile this weekend.

Details and some photos to follow.

The race is on for this weekend at maxton, NC.

Here's a photo of the race bike (my 1931 Harley V) which Dale Walksler of Wheels Through Time museum got running on the second kick after sitting un-run for 21 years!

That photo was taken 2 days ago and we have made plenty of progress with the bike since then.

Sure hope to see some forum members there this weekend.

Buzz
If Dale had full beard and all grey hair he'd look a LOT like one of my LATE & GREAT friends..since High School
In fact I'm copying and forwarding the above photo to his daughter...with Dale being in a very familiar pose....
Wish I could be there.

Well, if we don't set a record this weekend Dale might have gray hair!

Things here in MAxton look good. Rain stopped last night and the roads and track are drying up in time for morning passes.

Wish us luck!
