Question How to adjust spark on 1930 VL 74

Hi, How do I advance or retard the spark / timing on a 1930 VL 74 that no longer has the controls on the handlebars? There is a threaded rod, with a spring around it and a clip on top that looks like a metal flag on the left hand side of the case just above the clutch actuator rod. Is that it? I took a photo of it but cannot figure out how to insert it here so if you send me an email to bgreene30@aol.com I can send you the image.

Thanks in advance!!
Bob

Over the years a lot of riders changed the handlebars and other controls to remove the manual advance/retard function of the old bikes. The best way is usually to simply reach down and twist the timing mechanism by hand.

For most riding, it makes sense to kickstart it mostly retarded and ride it fully advanced.

For more info on classic motorcycles like your VL, check out the Classic American Iron Magazine site at www.caimag.com.

Question Re: How to adjust spark on 1930 VL 74

Thank you. Does what I described on the case sound like the spark adjuster and if so, does clockwise retard or advance? How can I send you a picture of the device I am referring to?

STOP! That device you posted is the drain for the sump NOT the ignition. Please be aware this is a total loss oiling system. So if you are going to ride the bike after it has sat for a while, it is recommended that you drain all the oil out of the sump (by pushing down that device - which turns to lock it open). Once the sump is basically drained, close that drain (your device) and give the engine 2 good shots of oil with the hand pump up on the oil tank.

If you are not familiar with these older bikes I strongly recommend asking lots of questions and go hang out at www.caimag.com to learn more so you do not do any damage to it by mistake. Or you can donate it to the Buzz Kanter museum donation fund
