Thanks for the info.Check this out, saturday i went riding with a buddy and we stopped for a cold one.Since I forgot my keys I reached down to unhook my coil wire, even though I could see my bike from where I was.The damn thing was'nt all the way in.I wonder if that could have played a part in the backfiring. When then shot out to a dealership to check on some parts and they had an ass kickin' knuckled rigid chopper for sale.May be time to dump the twinkie......

03,I don't know how many times you've been to Laconia but if you want to go to a down home biker bar go to the Loud Pipes Saloon it's in Somersworth N.H. 192 Main St. It's about 45 minutes from weirs near the border of Maine. And jimib, a loose plug wire? That'll do it!

Hey MTYEVO
Been to Laconia a couple of times but only hit Bike Week once. I'll check out the bar for sure. With a name like Loud Pipes how could I resist. I hit the Broken Spoke last year, just to get out of the rain. It was okay.
Hey Frisco, wish I read your post before hitting the dealer. I returned the SE and ordered the Dyna 2000. It has 16 pre-set curves and can be modfied well beyond that with a laptop computer and an other 200 worth of software.

On the basket case, I may have lucked out Sunday. Ran into a guy who just built a Softail from scratch. He has three quarters of a Santee rigid in his garage he wants to unlaod. It's in pieces, everything but the front end. He sold that already. Shows some wear, it was left in a field over a winter or two.(Read, under heaps of snow) Price is close to what I was thinking. Engine is leaking at the cases. He says I can buy the rest and leave the motor with him if I want. Of course if I do it, my 95 inch upgrade will have to wait.

I can't give an opinion on the basket without more info but if the price is right go for it! Just make sure that he has paper on the frame and drive train!

May I make a suggestion 03...
Unless you know what parts you're looking at and are sure they are the correct parts that "go together" for said basket you should have someone you know that does know what he's looking at give the OK...
Basket cases are notoriously jumbled together unrelated parts that have no worth other than individually,, did I say that understandably, OK, and sometimes mistakes that the seller realizes are unusable... And like myt says, the paperwork must be FLAWLESS...
Perhaps rather than a "basket",,, do your 95" upgrade, then slowly gather the parts you know will fit your dream project, no guesses or unpleasant surprises that way...

Hey Frisco
I hear you on the parts. That buddy with the Evo is a retired mechanical engineer from the Navy. He does all his own work on his bike and everything else he owns. He'll be a good guy to look it over. Now, on the papers, that could be the deal killer. I asked the guy if he had good title that I can get turned over to my name. He was a little evasive and said it would be challenging. Think I may look a little closer at what he has in papers and decide there.

Verify every piece of paper he comes up with to make sure they're authentic. Are you sure that front end isn't on his softail? The fact that it was lying in a field somewhere buried in snow doesn't sound quite right to me! Even if you crashed, thrashed, or just plain abandoned a basket case harley that you had, would you just leave it in a snowy field somewhere? Just make sure!

I hear you MTYEVO and I'm thinking maybe this isn't the one. I'll check it out, but keep my emotions out of it.
Learned a good lesson in the value of that today. When I first picked up my bike, the shop had a really nice 100th Anniversary riding jacket I liked. Since the bike is an anniversary Harley I thought why not. Then I saw the price, $1000.00. Yep a grand (Canadian, but that's still $900.00 US Greenbacks.) I walked away. In the spring of 04 they marked it down to $700, I still said no way. '05 they were down to two left and only one in my size, still $700 , no way. When I ordered my ignition on Monday I said to the woman in the "motorclothes" department "you ever plan to sell that or are you collecting it." This evening she called me and said $295.00. I said, set it aside I'll be there in the morning. Man, there were times I so wanted to buy it at 700. I'll take the same approach to the rigid.

Now a tech question -- given the thread and all I should get back to that. My new Dyna says to keep dialing up the presets until I get "pinging" and then drop back one. It's a Harley, not a submarine. How do I detect "pinging" above wind and the sweet rumble we all love? I am now at the second highest available preset for TC88's without internal mods and it feels great-- should I bump it to the top and assume my bike is ready for all the Dyna has to offer?

Believe me you'll know it when you hear it, even over the "sweet rumble" It sounds like loose ball bearing bouncing around inside your engine. If you lug your engine it'll even be more pronounced.

The mear thought of "challenging" paperwork should be enough to make you run, it would me...

I reckon you can change those "presets" when you want, yes..??
If you get it right up to the limit then it won't take much to put you over into detonation,, like a very hot day a large passenger full bags and a grade to pull,, then just drop it back a notch or two and carry on...
Never lug and keep yer ears open...
