Got a 2000 Heritage recently had a lotta engine work done to it (heads, pistons, cams). about a week ago engine started cutting out - like it was running on one cylinder. Buts that not all, folks! Speedo needle would jump between zero and current speed, odometer would flash on and off, check engine light would go on and off. when speedo needle was on zero and odometer was blank and check engine light was on the motor would still run but on one cylinder. I'd stop bike let 'er sit a while and when fired back up it'd run fine until something got hot (I'm guessing)to the point where this would start all over again. Took a long time to get home but, you knkow, all part of the adventure. Bike is carbureted. Some said it happened to them and it was because of metal in oil during break in messed with the speedo sensor. Any ideas?
To illustrate how these devil machines can throw foul balls atcha I'll share 2 times that similar happened to me...
One time I dropped the front cylinder intermittently at first then totally... Pulled the rear wire while runnin and it died that's how I knew it was the front,, turned out to be a gone-bad Dyna single fire coil...
500 miles from home dropped the rear cylinder on an HI-4, got to buddies shop, tried everything, changed everything, no diff... Then noticed when the steel points cover, the same steel points cover that had always been on it with no problems, was off, it would run,, put on, dropped cylinder... Figure that one out,,, finished the rest of the 1200 mile trip with no points cover... Once home, installed domed ALUMINUM cover no more probs...
Almost the same results but I bet not the same resons as you,,,
these machines are sent from hell and you have to work like the devil to fix em,,, jeeeze,, good luck...
To majicbringer, tipper and frisco-rigid (SF? East Bay myself) Thanks for the input. Gettin a full diagnostic done. Maybe it'll turn somethin up, maybe it won't.
I had a friend with a similar problem with his motor cutting out on him and it was something to do with a bad junction in his HEADLIGHT! Yup! Whodathunkit? So make sure they check all the connections.
Headlight? What kind of sadist thunk up the wiring on these machines? You'd think if there was a problem with the light wiring the light wouldn't work. Not your engine electronics would go south. Reminds me of what frisco-rigid said above about bedeviling machines.
I wish I could remember more details but the guy that owned the bike found it himself. Seems whomever repaired it didn't want to take the effort for a decent soldering job as he found things weren't just connected wrong, but things were TAPED together to boot! Knowing the guy I'm suspecting that the bikes a few ounces heavier and the wires are never EVER coming apart again.
