I put one on my carbed Wide Glide. It started right up. Dealer's trying to take your money.

Why did you change ignition? Was it for a no start or did you modify the engine? Try putting old parts in and see if bike starts. Double check part number to make sure it fitts your bike.

Default SE module

Sounds like you got the wrong module. If the bike has not been modified you will have less performance with the SE module than with the stock one. The two modules both retard the timing. One by 5 and the race module by 10 degrees. The rev limiters are higher with the SE modules but without other mods you are never going to see the higher rpm. Retarding the timing might make a bke run cooler but don`t expect it to be faster until compression has been increased .

Either way you need a new dealer. The one you have is a thief and not a very good one. Does he understand your bike has a carb ? I am sick of dealers who tell people their bikes have to be remaped or blown up on the dyno to run properly. I have just acquired an air/fuel meter and have started gathering headers that I can weld for sensors. Combined with a vacum guage tuning even efi bikes will loose the mystery

What Wright said. If no engine mods you should not need one. Waste of money. Dealer either gave you the wrong part or it is busted.

Wrightturn, I have an 04 Softail that is carbed, but it has a "check engine" lite that "self tests" before starting the bike. Tha bike has a "map" sensor above the carb under the gas tank. Can swapping out modules put the map in "open" loop?

Default open loop

Hey fxst04,

Nope. Open and close loop refer to two types of efi. An open loop efi uses a throtle position sensor to send info to the ecm. A closed loop system uses an oxygen sensor in the exhaust to signal adjustments to the injectors. You don`t have this with a carb. A carb can`t adjust the mixture from an electronic sensor.
When you change the module on a carb bike you are changing the timing and nothing else. A carb bike gets signals from the MAP sensor and crank position sensor to control the ignition. If you go with an SE module it is plug and play. If you go with an adlustable module you have timing choices but nothing changes the fuel mix on a carb bike but tools.
This is why a dealer telling a carb guy to remap is a crook. Remap what ? What engine mods have been made and do they require the timing to be changed with a different module ?
