Default Ultima Starters

My 2002 FLSTC starter stopped working. When I took off the primary the solenoid was engaging but the starter motor wasn't turning over. I now have the stater out but haven't taken it apart. I notice though that the output shaft doesn't turn that freely.

Since I upgraded the motor to 1550 and installed high lift cams (.580) and gear drive the stater has been struggling a bit. Rather than rebuild I've been leaning to installing a new 1.4 kw starter instead to get more kick.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Ultima Thunder fire starter? It seems to be priced very reasonably which of course makes me wonder.

i have used them, got good use out of them, only thing i didnt like was the bolt that goes in the jackshaft...the thunderfire is threaded for two different types and the bolt isn't quite long enough...for a 2001 it takes the small 10-32 thread....i ended up getting a all balls starter paid about the same price for it as the thunderfire...i got mine off e bay .a store called eastern performance.since i bought the starter from them i have bought a lot of parts from them and was very happy with their service........

Thanks for the reply Low Rider. I had been leaning to the All Balls based on some other threads. I've gone ahead and ordered one. I looked at the prices from Eastern Performance and they are very good. The freight to Canada though at $69.00 took some of the steam out of it. I bought one local instead. I sure would like to take part in some of that free shipping going on down there...
