Default fuel gauge messin with me

Fuel gauge on an 02 FLHT, carburated became very erratic. At full tank it stays steady, reading FULL, but after about 30 miles it drops and recovers, then drops again. Here's the weird part. When the bike is on it's sidestand the gauge behaves well. When the bike sits straight up, it's back to erratic movement.
I've shorted the gauge, reads full.
Sending unit, maybe? Repairable or replace only?

Thanks

Pete

PS. Have the electrical manual, weak on electrics

Hey, Peter...on my '94 ultra, the stud which mounts the sender to the tank, is also the electrical connection. The brass nut decides to loosen every once in a while. My gauge will read many different things, from full to nothing in a half mile. I don't know if the '02 is the same, but you might take a look. It's under the dash/ fuel door ass'y. I tried using blue locktite to retain it, and didn't like the results. Too hard to loosen the nut upon disassembly. Good luck...take care...

As it turned out, the fuel sending unit was the bad guy.
And....

We're in the middle of a heat wave here in Vancouver, BC.
34 Celcius, 93 Farenheit

Whoa mamma, it's HOT!!

Hey Peter, I was on my way to Van last Sat, stopped in Kamloops for the night and came home Sunday for work. Yes, it was hot, and well worth the 1100 mile rounder.

Ha! I was out of town in Eureka for the last 3 days for work... and was enjoying the 55 degree weather.... running around in my short sleeved tee-shirt.... quite a break from our normal of 100* weather here in Lake and Sonoma County's this time of year.....(where I normally work)

Glad you got some nice warm weather to go riding in... too hot to work...you gotta get on the bike to stay cool!!!
