Frisco,
do have a clymer for that year model... and an amf 70 to Early 78 AMF SERVICE manual that i found on ebay. check on the springs... will find them. I'll look at weights closer. I must say I was really bummed about the whole thing... but with your advice and advice of others... she is back to 90%. I think we are almost into "Tweaker Mode".
thanks frisco
just an udate... parts ordered... springs for advance weights... should arrive wednesday. Until then... securing wires.... when I shorted out the green wire leading to rear brake light... I took all and I mean all the plastic sheaths covering the wires lokin for possible exposed wires or burnt wires, etc... so now it I get to put it back... then re-attach my wires back to where they are suppose to go. Also circuit breakers rusty... i mean rusty... seem to work but replacing them... so if you any advice on covering exposed wires... I am listening. Thanks again. will keep you updated.
When you say "exposed wires" do you mean wires that some insulation has worn off or do you mean wires, in good condition, that are simply visible and easily accessible..???
If there are wires with worn away insulation you have 3 choices..
Replace..
Dis-connect from the closest end and slip shrink wrap (a couple pieces for extra protect) and then re-connect..
OR, if procrastination is at work, simply wrap the dog-doo outa the worn section and hope for the best..
Then perhaps the most important job----- you should secure & protect the wires from pinching, chaffing, rubbing, abuse of any kind,, by routing them better and tie-wrapping into a more secure spot..
One thing I've done a few times is make a "barn-yard" loom..
If there are a few wires going in the same direction I take a piece of Shrink-wrap, cut a hole in the appropriate place/s and slip those wires into it allowing the Branching out wires to go their way outa that/those holes cut in the wrap.. But--- I do not shrink it,, I leave them loose for easy removal..
There are a couple other materials for making a loom, that's just one way..
Then secure as stated before..
I think that's the stuff you are asking about..
You woulda figured that out in just a few more minutes..

well... frisco,
meaning... wire
exposed with some worn through... especially the one i created.
all good input... barnyard... definitely.. leave it loose for easy removal... excellent... would have thought about that down the road.. cussing myself as i was surgically using my leatherman tool, all the time sweating knicking wires. thanks frisco..

Frisco,
I put back all wires and covered them carefully. The spring are somewhere... but expecting tomorrow. Still... to unsettled in rpms to time with light... so i static timed to mark bulls eye in timing hole. She started within 3-4 kicks... she hesitates at quick throttle. I took out for a spin... she spun very well. no pauses when throttling up to speed... no deceleration pops... and i decelarated abruptly... post warm... killed engine then after 10 minutes... kicked her to life in two. She is almost back... still smokes at idle but none to little when at 1200rpms... hesitates again when throttle abruptly opened. As for the idle screw.. when i began manipulating, it was probably 4-5 turns out. so how does someone determine how many turns out? I am very excited... she is becoming the bike i had on Aug. 14th. thanks to you and big incher... and others. well... i will put in springs on weights then time. thanks again.... oh, yea it felt good to be on the road again..
well frisco,
wires re-connected, new circuit breakers and all covered. waiting for parts... should be here tomorrow. in the mean time, static timed with mark at dead center at timing hole. started in 4-6 kicks. some hesitation when opening throttle quickly. did take it out on road. accelarated well with no back fires and no popping during deceleration. no cutting out or misses... post ride... let her set for 10 min.s then kicked her on in two. she is almost back... frisco. thanks to you and big incher... and others. will continue to work on .. springs for advance weights to arrive then time with light. she smokes mildly to moderately when idling... but during rpms above 1000... very little. smoke white. As for the idle screw... yea i screwed with it... it was about 4-5 turns out... originally. now maybe about the same. it was great to be back on the road... she sounds much better. there is life beyond shorted wires.
thanks frisco
With that carb, turning the Idle A/F Mix screw OUT means you're trying to fatten the A/F mix..
Normally, if you've gone past about 3 turns attempting to fatten up, it ususally means the Idle Jet is tooo small..
In-other-words you're trying to make it fatter than it is able to do so you keep turning it out.. Soooo----
You might wanna try the next size Idle Jet up.. Then you might be able to stay in the correct 2 - 3 turns out range..
Remember to lube the weight posts & the weights tiny contact points, and the center rotor/cam post with a light coat of light grease..
Tip--- if you got those next strength Up springs and it feels a wee sluggish then remove ONE spring and replace with one of the old springs OR if you got a whole set of Light, Medium and Heavy springs use one of the New Light springs with a Medium..
With that set of diff strength springs you can mix n match to get your Rate of Advance right where you want it..
When you get the timing Correct, where you want to keep it,, use a scribe or something like that to mark the inside of the timing cover with a corresponding scribe mark on the timing Plate---- that way you can remove the timing plate as often as you wish (to change springs or whatever) and simply line up those marks and you'll be back at your desired timing each time..

I am listening. Will do... consider jet, lube lightly on posts, contact points & rotor/cam post, and scribe the sweet time so can get it right evertime... I am learning... reading relevant and near relevant threads... lot to learn.
thanks Frisco
