Default 05 Dyna Wiring Short

Gidday Campers,

I have an 05 FXDX that developed a short in the wiring loom underneath the gearbox behind the exhaust crossover pipe. It did not cause the standard ignition module any problems but it sent confusing signals to my S+S IST.

This portion of the loom contains the main charging wires and thus deserves immediate attention! Fire may result if this is not attended to.

So far only the models with the loom cliped to the frame appear to be affected.

It is an easy but tedious fix. First disconnect the battery. The loom needs to be removed from under the bike and simply wrap the worn wires with electrical tape. Then use race tape to reseal the loom caseing. I attached three plastic zip ties around the frame and loom to pull the loom onto the frame and away from the bottom of the gearbox. Then refit the loom and hook up the battery.

I removed the rear wheel and guard to make access easier, but it may be possible to do the job without removing these items.

I have done over 1000 miles since this repair with no further problems.

I hope this helps.

Live long and prosper, Tux
