Default 1948 Panhead Project

I normally don't reveal our future magazine projects because once we do there are always unanticipated problems that slow us down. Like missing parts or ones that don't fit or work right, or magazine deadlines that take priority.

Well, as forum members I am going to share with you my next classic project bike. It's a fairly original but poorly restored 1948 Harley Panhead I bought a few years ago and have been trying to get around to doing. It has not run in years and we'll have to find out why once we start laying on wrenches.

Here is a before photo I took a few days ago, sorry it's not better quality but lousy lighting in the garage.

Our goal is to throw it into our truck and drive down to Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC next Sunday. We are assembling a small but dedicated and experienced team to tear it all the way down (the easy part), fix and repair everything that needs it and to reassemble it (the tough part) as a correct and fully functioning machine by Friday. Yep, in five days we will either be heroes or zeros. But I suspect we will all be exhausted either way.

Now I realize it ususally takes a year or more to tackle an undertaking like this, but what the heck, we're all pretty busy, so we decided to do it in 5 days. We will not be painting or plating anything so we won't have to wait for those time consuming tasks.

The team is Dale & Matt Walksler, Matt Olsen, me, and whoever else we can scare up around the museum.

Full coverage (with better photos) scheduled for later in the year in American Iron Magazine.

Wish us luck.

It looks like you have some very well qualified people on the project. We will be looking forward to the article.

We scheduled 5 days for this project with the ability to stay a 6th day if necessary. Wasn't necessary as we were done and finished in 3 days.

Amazing things can be done with a crew as well versed and experienced as our team AND having so many spare parts on hand as they have at Wheels Through Time Museum.

We added 2 new pistons, rings and wrist pins and replaced 3 valves. Rebuilt the carb, redid the wiring, built both wheels with original rims, and a whole lot more. Pretty wild.

Default End of Day 1

Here is a phot of the bike after we worked on it for one day. Dale got it running before lunch, then we pulled the top end and some incorrect items on the bike. We started the process of crustorizing the tin, and pulled one of the wheels to redo. LONG first day!

Unhappy Missing my ol' pan

Awe Buzz, there ya go stirring up memories of my ol' pan. I can't wait to see this project go through the whole process. Please keep us posted with the "sneak peak" as it is kinda like back stage passes at a concert.

Did some one spray paint all over it at the shop for a reason?

We finished the "crustorization" of my original 1948 Panhead. It looks so good everyone who sees it believes it just rolled right out of a barn somewhere.

We will be following what we did and how in the magazine starting with the June 2008 issue. Pretty cool deal with a great bunch of guys. Total overhaul and rebuild (top end, carb, front end, wheels and more PLUS a full cosmetic overhaul) in less than 3 days!

Now I can't wait for better riding weather to get her out on the road!

Buzz, when are you going to take it for a test ride? If you do, ride it across the mountain to Cherokee, several old bike fans over here that would love to check it out.

I'd love to ride over to Cherokee, but the bike and I are both in Connecticut and that's aloooooooong ride for us.
