Parkway Harley-Davidson owner and former Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association president Gene Lummus died last week from cancer. He was 64.
Lummus was one of the driving forces behind the annual Smoky Mountain Toy Run, held every December, in which hundreds of motorcycle riders would carry thousands of donated toys from Asheville, N.C., to his dealership in Swannanoa.
Lummus and his wife, Brenda, moved to Swannanoa in 1987, where he opened the dealership and soon became involved in various charitable activities, mostly benefiting children and military veterans.
Professionally, Lummas was known as a motorcycle customization expert and won several racing trophies. In addition to his role at the state dealers association, he also was a sponsor of the Smoky Mountain Harley Owners Group.
Lummas is survived by his wife; a daughter, Taylor Lummus Ledford; a son, Travis; and two grandchildren.
