Default Oil Brands

I use RED LINE Synth in all the cases. Big Twin 20W50 for the engine, Heavy Duty Shock Proof in the Tranny to quite the noise in 5th gear and they have a Special formular Lub for the Primary. It shifts really smooth. The engine runs much cooler.

Default Brands Matter

A while back, maybe a few years or so, Donny Peterson did a whole big deal on Oil, Brands of Oil, what exactly is in all the major oil companies oil and why these things are important to air cooled engines, in particular why they work or don't work for HD V-twins. He gave the oil companies a free hand to explain thier product, and what's in it. Then he had it tested and showed the results. I agree with a lot of what has been written so far, Red Line works excellent, but so does some of the other tranny oils, including some of the big syn companies. But for the engine, I wanted to know all I could about those oils tested, and Donny's articles, which covered about 6 months worth of continuous long articles was the only thing that made me feel like I was getting good info. All the rest of it seems like pure guess work to me. Research it if your serious, then you'll know. Write AIM for the dates and articles. I'm sure they have them all in one of their "Important" folders to have because this question keeps coming up all the time. They'll send you the back articles or issues to look in and read them.

Actually oil does have a shelf life. Hard to believe but it does. After a certain amount of time the additives lose their properties. This according to NORIA.

I was an Amzoil fan and tried to sell it for a very short time before I realized it was a pyramid, but the oil is good stuff, and i will be telling the dealer to stick it after reading all the oil threads here i feel that the truth is in these forums as to syn three! it's a sin alright and we should all tell a friend!,The lessons learned here are the best thanks for them.

Interesting how a thread like this just keeps on keepin on..

Here's a couple sources of research for all..
Outa all the OIL reading I've done these are about the best I've ever read..

On this first one,, collapse the left hand menu thing and then press control and spin the mouse wheel backwards, I think, to make the text get bigger..
http://www.sportster.org/tech/Oiland...Motorcycle.pdf

and

Oil FAQ

and

Testing Motorcycle Oil

The only guy on this forum that is Actually "schooled" on the subject of Oil is Bluesfan,,,, all the rest of us just know what we've read and researched and of course from experience..
These links will fill in some voids in knowledge and of course, there's many other sites also..

I guess oil preferance is a personal thing as to what we've been using with good results?? I checked out this web site and do you think Amsoil is blowing smoke or are they just touting their product. I'm thinking about using it in this change. Oil coolers make a dif also.
Amsoil vs. Redline Oil
I've been using HD products except in the trany where I use Belray. I Have 12K on the bike and after changing over to geqar drive cams and seeing minimal wear on the tensioners HD oil didn't do such a bad job.
Thanks to this forum I've been getting some great info..
