Default Bel-Ray Hypoid Gear Oil in transmission

The HD dealer where i purchased my 08 FatBoy advised me to use BEL-RAY gear saver hypoid gear oil, SAE 85W-140.
Anyone use this oil or have any thoughts on this gear oil. I was going to use the HD Formula + , but the parts people says the service department uses the BEL-RAY gear oil when they change transmission fluid.
Your thoughts please. I copied this from the bel-ray site

Bel-Ray Gear Saver Hypoid Gear Oil Series
#93300 (93320,93350)
Bel-Ray Gear Saver Hypoid Gear Oil is formulated for sliding contacts of spiral bevel gears in differentials and shaft drive transmissions. It provides superior lubricity and anti-wear, added power, smooth shifting and gear protection.
Grades: 80W-90,85W-140,90

I bet they use Bel Ray because they have had complaints about to much noise on some bikes that use SYN3 in the trans. I don't think the noise will hurt anything but to keep people happy, they use Bel Ray. I'm sure it's okay to use, which is best is open to debate. I for one like synthetics because of the different climates I ride in. From real cold to real hot.

Right now it is a toss-up between the HD Formula + and the Bel-Ray. Is the Formula + thiner then the Bel-Ray. If so the Bel-Ray should be the best choice for the transmission. Am i on the right track here?

I don't know what this HD Formula+ is. If it is a gear lube put it in your tranny. If it is a motor oil put it in your motor. Here's a simple rule: motor oil for motors, gear lube for transmissions - never use one in place of the other except in a dire emergency. I know HD says Syn3 can be used everywhere, but don't do it. Motor oil does not belong in a transmission - ask any transmission shop. Any GL5 will do the job nicely and your tranny will live longer.

My dealer put Bel Ray in my 06 SEE Fatboy and it has run well for 11k+ miles. I don't know how good Bel Ray is but I'm happy with it so far after almost 3 years.

Thumbs up

Just a followup to my initial ideas on the Bel Ray gear oil.
I did fill the tranny with the Bel Ray and it runs just fine. Can find neutral with no problems and do not have objectionable gear wine.
Looking good so far!

I don't have time today to rehash this completely.

For those that don't know me, I see at least one new name, I am a Level II machinery lubrication analyst and I am a Predictive maintenance engineer.

My main focus is lubrication at a nuclear power plant. I also do Ulttrasound, listening for defects in bearings, eletrical gear, etc, vibration analisys, and thermograghy, as soon as my certs get here.

Any way, the weights of gear oil and motor oil are not related. The SAE values are on 2 different scales. Quick example, 20 weight motor oil overlaps the ranges for 75 and 80 gear oils.

For a motor in a HD, use syn, we need it for temp. Syn 3, mobil 1, royal purple, etc. Stick with 20W-50 as recommended.

Use a good filter.

For tranny and primary.

Use the right fluid.

Yes, you can use the same in all, but it cannot and willl not do as good of a job.

It's not the viscocities that are different (much) it's the additives. The anti wear and extreme pressure additives are key.

That said, based on conversations thaqt involved HD factory guys, a Belray guy, and several refinery folk (Love the diverse mix in training claqsses) I am going to Belray for my trannies and primaries at the next changes.

I am planning on using their specific products though. I will look at the hypoid as a choice now.

Belray does not publish their tech data, but they will give it to me if I ask.

So I will do that tomorrow, just made a note for myself.

Search under the oil threads and I posted one discussing this in some depth.

I've used Bel-Ray in both my bikes for years. About as good as it gets.

Default Bel-Ray

Ok a few of you guys said you use Bel-Ray in your trans. No one mentioned what weight. 85-140?
BluesFan mentioned Bel-Ray for primaries. I'm sure he did not mean gear lube. Does Bel-Ray make something more siutable for primaries?
Ah-the never ending quest for perfect lubrication.
