Default Primary vent???

My primary has started leaking oil, for the first time ever (13 years). It appears to be pressurizing when hot. Does anyone know if there is a vent on the primary, similar to the tranny vent? and is there a drain plug on the primary, or do I have to remove the outter primary cover to change the oil? I have pumped the oil out before, but it just seems that there should be a drain plug and magnet on something that contains moving chains and gears. I've got the haynes manual for the big twin, but it isn't much help on this one.
I guess you are probably wondering what machine? 1993 FXR evo. It's got about 60,000 miles, and works great other than this leaking issue.
Any help would be appreciated.
Steve

Hey Tayes,, yup there should be a torx or allen screw plug on the bottom rear outer cover face(below the derby) at 6 o'clock...
Don't know about a vent, but you can rig one up with an ordinary pcv valve maybe...
Now that you've sprung a leak just maybe you'll have to change the outer-to-inner gasket anyway... If you do, you'll find long and short screws, don't mix them up, and remember you'll be screwing into aluminum,,,, don't strip em...
And,,,Anti-seize is wonderful stuff...

f you have to change the primary gasket go with the Cometic AFM gasket, they're guaranteed not not to leak. They come in different thicknesses, go with the thickest.

Thanks guys. I found the torx screw at the 6:00 position under the derby. Changed the fluid, cleaned the inner and outter primary covers, and the bottom of the engine to see where the oil was coming from. Took a drive, and it didn't leak a drop last night. I guess a nice long drive this weekend should make it leak, if it is going to. If it is the primary gasket, I will order the thick Cometic job.
Thanks,
Steve

Dont know what kind of bike you have , and if it has a shifter going through the middle of the primary, like on the old FXR's.....but if so, then this will be a somewhat ongoing problem if that is where it is. I change the seals on my shifter every year. Aggravating. INstead of buying a new inner primary, I am looking at taking the old shifter rod out of there and plugging the h ole on the inner primary with a freeze plug. Lot cheaper than new inner primary. Good luck on finding it.

Those cometic AFM gaskets are awesome. I had reoccuring leaks from my inner to outer primary, but the inspection plate leaked since new. I purchased a vent kit, but was waiting to tear it down to install. In the mean time, cometic came out with th AFM gaskets. Go to Cometic.com On the home page, you'll see harley davidson- click on it, go to the next page, but instead of filling out the info on your bike, look to the left. In the column, click on harley and, low and behold, an exploded view of the primary appears, with all gaskets, seals, and years listed. I found this a great help to identify my gaskets. If you still want a vent, I'll get the part number for you. Try this first. These aren't thick gaskets, in fact, very thin. I was skeptical, but they worked great. Be sure to get the AFM gaskets. Oh yeah, you'll need adobe reader to get the exploded view. Good luck!

Sorry- miss spoke about the gasket thickness- what I meant was they are thin compared to the harley gasket.
