| | Syn Oil - Mobil 1....?? Not long ago there was an article in AI where the various type of lube were reviewed....I think by Donny Pederson. If I rememvber correctly Mobil 1 was the weapon of choice. Does anyone have that article or remember the out come? I looked over the site for a reprint but can't seem to find it. Thanks to the DF that issue was thrown out.....

| | Mobil 1 20W50 is no longer...butyou can buy Mobil 1 VTwin, which is the same, but costs about $4.00/liter more. It takes the high temps the best (sorry, Majic). But you can't go wrong with any of the higher end motorcycle oils. The competition between Mobil 1 and Amsoil will never be won and will never go away...

| | You can buy Mobil 1 20W50.
It just comes from Harley labelled Syn 3.
That said, go with Amsioil, Mobil, Syn3, Royal Purple. Any good 20W50 in the engine.
With the heat we generate we need the synthetics resistance to oxidation.
Stay with minerals for the tranny and prmary. There is no advantage to syns there and proper oils for each have different additives than an engine oil.

| | I talked to the folks at Red Line Syn in Benicia Ca., for their reccommendation re: oils. They said, 20w-50 for the engine, MTL, manual transmission light for the primary, and heavy shockproof for the tranny. Check out the Red Line web site.

| | A couple years ago I actually tried the RedLine Heavy Shock-Proof (it looks like a pink milkshake) in one of my high-mile trannies that had never leaked before, with-in a couple weeks it was virtually flowing outa every connection... Drained it, put back HD tranny fluid, no preference just use it for convienience, and it hasn't leaked since...
Do you or did you ever use any of the RedLine products twally..??
What I've read in soo many articles and even on an oil website or 2 seems to be true,, that is, SYN does want to find a way outa the gaskets--SOMETIMES- not always, it did that time anyway...

| | I just completed my 20K service and put Mobil 1 20W-50 SYN in all three spots (motor, primary, and trans). I did this after reading several opinions on oil and lube and talking with my local HD shop. They said Harley went to 20W-50 all around. I live in the NorthWest and have put about 50 miles on this batch of lube. Have I done something wrong. Its not too late to fix if I have..... Any input is welcome.

| | I would say,,don't worry one bit,, no big deal...
Just as BluesFan says,,,, there are specific fluids for specific reasons, but you've done no harm at all...
Years ago I came across a 5 gallon jug of Delo 30, a diesel truck motor oil-- free so heck, I put it in my forks and my trannies, took several years to go through it all, didn't hurt a thing, eventually had to start puttin in the correct stuff and gee, like I said no harm done--- you're OK...

| | I noted that BluesFan stated use conventional oils in primary & tranny 'cause there is no advantage to synthetics there. I disagree. IF you ride in cool to cold weather, having the easier flowing synthetics helps out, especially in the gearbox. I've run a variety of oils in my '84 & am NOT using synthetics currently, but I have run Castrol Syntec 5W50 in engine & primary & Wal-Mart synthetic gear oil in tranny. I'm running H-D's regular oil now in engine 'cause I've got weeping gaskets & I think worn valve guides or seals (go through about 1L oil in 1,000Km, with heavy deposits on front spark plug). Once I solve weeping gaskets, etc (some day, when I feel it's time) then I'll be running full synthetic again.
