just purchased 98 wide glide that has been lowered. changed oil for the first time put in three quarts and dip is showing a little more than full. before I remove any thought that the loering kit,new angle might make oil read differant than stock angle how many quarts shouls and evo wideglide take including new filter?
My suggesiton would be to go get the manual and parts book for your make and model. Just do it.
There have been instances of engine oil working its way into the primary case, due to seals and such - case porosity shouldnt be an issue with your year.do you have a longer filter on your bike?
I'd pop your primary cover and take a look.
Problem is, if you dont get your manuals, you wont know what your looking at or what the spec is.
wanker - who gets nervous if oil just disappears rather than spewing all over the side of the bike (at least this way you kknow what to fix, like the pushrod tube i just had to replace)
My Shovel takes 3 quarts with filter, I think that's about right for an Evo too. If front and rear of the bike were lowered equal amounts dipstick reading should be accurate. I would remove enough so that it's slightly below full. The factory owners manuals say to check hot, to account for expansion of the oil with heat. Once you are used to the bike you will know how much to allow for.
I have never been able to put as much oil in my bike as the book tells me to without going over the full line.
I drain. Remove filter. fill. Open drain hose again to get air out until oil comes out. I run bike for about 10 seconds with filter of until clean oil comes out. Put a few ounces in filter lub ribber gasket and put back on. Make sure its at the full line and go for a ride. When I get back there is room to put a tad more back in. Never the full amount stated in manual.
Three quarts with filter. I also agree with shovelmike drain enough so it's just below the full line. Also make sure you check your oil while it's on the kick stand.
I have a 94 Wideglide and it take about 2 3/4 quarts and my 95 FLHT takes about 3 1/2 quarts. According to the books it should be 3 qts for FXDWG and 4 for FLHT. I also fill my filters about half way before installing.
Just changed my WG oil this past week, its a 97 (tho a 98 model) so the same as yours, manual says 2.8 litres, I put this amount in and let it settle, when checked its on the full (cold) mark.
