Default Wix filter for twin cam used in an evo ???

Wix filter for twin cam used in an evo ???

Wix filter #51438 is for twin cams (1999+) and has a 24 micron element.

Wix filter #51215 is for evos and has a 21 micron element.

Other that this micron thing, the filters are identical.

Is this difference significant. or can I use the twin cam filter in my 1992 FXLR (evo low rider) ?

The reason the twin cam uses such high micron rating is because of the oil jets that spray oil on the bottom of the pistons to keep them cool.
They are very small and would clog up easily, that is why the higher micron filters.
The Evo does not have these jets.
Also the twin cam has an improved oil pump to improve oil flow and compensate for the more restrictive oil filter.
So no I would not run the high micron filter on the Evo.

Don't use the Wix in the Twin Cam. Too coarse.

You're right.

Asked at dealer parts counter, from an old salty biker that works at the parts counter, said twin cam filter has a "baffle" (check valve?). Said that HD does not use it in evo, because restricts flow in evo, and stock evo oil pump not adequate for twin cam filter.

Pancho
What your "old salty biker" was talking about is a by-pass/relief valve that most oil auto/cycle filters have. When excess pressure builds up in the filter the relief valve allows oil to pass thru the filter...unfiltered...which is not a good thing.

On my Softail Evo I run a deep K&N filter for a Dyna Evo (#KN173C) that fits perfectly.. because the deeper filter has more filtering surface ( slightly courser than TC filters) for the oil to pass thru resulting in less internal pressure than a shorter and/or TC filter (in the same condition) and they have a stronger relief valve than some other filter brands...noting that micron ratings mean NOTHING if oil's by-passing the filtering element anyhow.

Personally I would just pick up a S4 K&P filter and be done with it. About $125-$150. Completely re-useable, better filtration and GPM than any of the above listed and includes a magnetic pre-filter

Better filtration?

They don't even list a nominal, much less a Beta, rating.

Twin Cams need 5 micron filters. You cannot see that, how can you be sure it's clean?

It's easy to build a filter that gets out stuff you can see, it's another thing entirely to manage 5 microns.

And what filter runs 5 micron filtering? HD?

I don't see the info on their site but I will have to check the brochure at home on the K&P. But I think its in the 20 micron area...

All I can get from their website..
ASTMF316 filtration performance

I know that I have been running Scotts (made by K&P) on dozens of race bikes from my past of rice rockets. Further, I know many guys that have 60-75k milage evo's with K&Ps. You only need to do 9 or 10 oil changes to gain back your money.
