Default Primary Oil

Hey all

As alot of you already know, stator went out on my 96 FXDWG, so when the parts arrive in 7 days, I have to empty the primary and try to replace the stator.
So, that being said, I havent had the bike all that long and when i bought it the place i bought it from changed all the oil in engine, tranny and primary. This guy is a lover of revtech pure oils and recommends that thats what i use. Ok, fine, but what about the primary? what kind of fluids do i use for it? The guy i bought the bike from says dont use synthetics, bike is to old? anyway.....help....Once again

I just did a oil change and put bel-ray primary oil in the primary as well in the trany. When I asked the dealer (Harley) he told me that he sells more of it than the Harley or Synthetic stuff for the primary. Anybody have an opinion.. I know about opinions but won't go into that..

Thanks guys for the input.

I have always ridden street and dirt bikes of the jap. variety before i bought this fxdwg, and always ran synthetics in them with great results, oils such as belray, golden spectro and the like, in both mixing fuel and oil(2 strokes) and as crankcase/tranny oil. I've just been led to believe that the harley evo engine/tranny was designed to be used with fossil oils, so naturally i am a little reticent about using syns.
That being said, I read somewhere that dextron/mercron 2 was good to run in the primary and that it helps keep the clutch plates clean. will this affect anything else in the primary? like the chain or the alternator?

The only thing I would check is what clutch is installed, is it stock or aftermarket. Some aftermarket clutches state to not use Sen.

I remember reading that Donny Petersen article and as I recall, Donny recommended using a good full synthetic 20w-50 oil in the crankcase and in the primary. In the transmission, Donny likes a 75w-110 full synthetic gear oil. I've been running AMSOIL products that meet tese criteria in my '04 Low Rider w/o incident.

I DO NOT recommend 20w50(synthetic or fossil) in the primary or the trans,I've seen too many problems arguably caused by this practice.I use Spectro primary lube & either Spectro Gear Guard or Red Line for the transmission.I used these products for years with the racing bikes as well as all my personal stuff & have never had a problem or found anything better.
