The first article in the Rustoration of Panhead starts in the February issue of American Iron Magazine. It's an original paint 1965 Electra Glide I bought on eBay. It hasn't run in a least 20 years and it was brought back to life by Dale Walksler at Wheele Through Time Museum. Pretty cool. Are articles like this popular? It is more "real world" than the first Rustoration we did on a 1924 Harley JD.
Well, Dual Carb, seems like you're getting a little ahead of things, asking us to pass judgement on an article we haven't read yet. But what the hay, it's Christmas Eve and I've still got two cents left! Sounds like it should be cool; the JD was pretty neat, but you're right, not too many of us are going to pursue projects that are that old on a regular basis. My favorite of late was "Skin-Deep Beauty", because that sounds like a bike that could happen to me. About the time that I get confident in my abilities I would get burned and have no choice but to start from the ground and work up. It sounds like the owner was personally involved in every part of the rebuild, made a lot of his own bits, had problems and even bought some of the same parts twice when the first ones didn't work out so well. That's real world! ... or at least that's the way things seem to work for me.
I will follow the series, I find that stuff interesting, something to dream about, even if most of that stuff is beyond my abilities. May I suggest an absolutely inclusive price list? (Even if you got it off E-Bay.) I read the parts list on the feature bikes, but I am always curious about the total cost involved.
Actually the February issue of American Iron Magazine whould be in the subscribers mailboxes by now and on the newsstand racks in a week or so.
I like the idea of more "do it yourself" project bikes most people can afford.
And we haven't spent much on the Dead Pan Rolling project other than time and knowledge by Dale (plus some chemicals and a used battery).
Okay, Dual Carb, you weren't too far off the mark. Got the Feb issue today. Read "Dead Pan" first thing. Yep, looks pretty real world to me. Certainly deserves to be a rustoration! I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Dual Carb, read part II today. Wow, not a bad return on investment! I mean, it didn't seem like it took an inordinate amount of work to get the bike rolling again! We should all be so fortunate when choosing the next project. Looking forward to seeing the color photos! By the way, really enjoyed the "FULL CIRCLE" article too.
Thanks, yes I did get lucky on this one. And I had Dale Walksler, a GREAT wrench, do the dirty work. The April issue should be in the mail in a week or two and shows the stuff I did to the bike, like install rear lights and turnsignals. Then full color feature in the May issue. It's turning into a great bike. Buzz
