Default Lower Fairings on a ultra

Is it ture that when the temp hits 70, you should take the lowers off, because it runs cooler?

I have an "03" and I have never taken the lowers off. Been down south and west. I never read anything in the manuel regarding this, but the way their designed they look to be bringing more air in than without, if that makes any sense?

I used to ride with them on in the fall, winter, and early spring. I now have desert dogs. They're soft, with velcro and a strap. Perfect! you can take them off, fold 'em in half, and stick em in the tourpak or saddle bag.

Oldman, you're right, as long as you are moving. But, in traffic, I think you're better off with out them.

Yeah 94flhtcu, If you gonna be doing city ridin', You may wanna take them off. Hell, an oil cooler won't even help in city driving coz ya gotta be going at least 50 mph to cool the oil.

I too run my lowers year round, manual doesn't say yay or nay (02). But yeah, in a traffic jam the heat is terrible; Don''t think it matters much whether they are there or not moving that slow. I've read that remapping with a Power Commander or the like might drop temps. I like most don't have money to burn so any input is appreciated.

I've got a '99 with 74000 miles,95ci,head work, gear cams etc.. I leave my on all the time.Been to the BRP and DC,out west in 100plus temps, riding two up and packed for two with no troubles.I do run Amsoil,I think/feel that that helps.I did install vents in the lowers and that sure makes it more enjoyable on those hot days.

Thanks ULTRA. I've seen those vents on e-glide goodies site, I thought they might help- in fact I think the new H-D's have similar vents. Man, you've racked up some miles, glad to here she going strong. I've got 25,000 on my Ultra, can't break away long enough to go too far. I'm thinking it might be time to change to gear drive cams for reliability. The 88 runs pretty sweet and I don't need any catastrophic breakdown.

Have a look at your cam chain wear shoes asap!At that many miles they may need replacing.HD doesn't say anything about how long they should last, but mine were worn out at about that many miles. Then it's time for gear drives.
