Default Wideglide Fork knock

Have a 2000 wideglide with a knocking sound coming from the fork tubes and sliders when you hit a pot hole or bump. You can set front brake and start pumping fork up and down and when the fork gets near the bottom or just as it starts up you hear the knock. Bottom bolt on slider tight. Anybody ever have this problem? Does not effect ride, just annoying to listen to.

Check the the steering head for slop by locking the front brake and rocking the bike back and forth. You can definitely get a knock from a loose steering head and it at first sounds like it's coming from the forks. It might still be the forks or damper tubes but check that steering head too.

Default Double the torque

Had the same problem on my 2000WG when new. One of the techs at the local HD Dlr said he vagley remembered something from one of his classes. Went home looked up his notes (not published anywhere by harley) here is where my memory dosent serve me well. but the note said double the torque to 100 ft lbs versus I beleive 50, that was 6+ years ago never had the knock since.....

Its the dreaded 'Wide Glide clunk' as mentioned torque up and maybe consider a heavier fork oil (maybe an extra ounce in each leg as well)..worked for me.

my memory fails me now,... but somewhere i read that(think ai) that this is a common problem and it usually has to do with the steering head. take apart, check for wear and or galding on race, clean and regrease the steering head bearings(repack), re-install and tighten untill you feel a click and then back off a quarter turn and your clunk should go away.
wait.... I remember where i read it!!!it was in the hog helpline section of AI awhile back so read your past issues!!!guy had the same problem as you. Article also told you how to diagnos problem as well

I agree with the steering head bearing crowd. It's a known issue for V-Rods and there is a bulliten about the steering head clunk. It does effect Dynas as well.

If you haven't already, check your "fall away adjustment." When you finish with that adjustment, tigten down the lock nut on the steering stem to about 100 Ft-Lbs.
