I have a sneaky feeling you didn't think about this question before you posted it huh...

How tall are your stock OEM bars-----?
Now subtract that from 18" -- the answer tells you how many inches over stock...
Hey, don't forget you gotta lengthen your electrics also...
If you know which end of a wrench to hold you shouldn't have any problems,,, I like to hear a guy talk about doing his own work, good man...

Just something to think about, if your bike falls off the stand or you have a go-down or any number of things that could/will happen and you bend one of the high dollar A N bars, well, you'll have to replace that whole high dollar unit...
You just might look into a set of for-real 18" bars,, bend a bar or decide to try a different length,,, just get some new bars and install em on the existing risers,, soo simple...

the last thing i want to do is offend but here are some considerations about Apes. 1. they are illegal in nearly every state and not just because they felt like it. unless you are very tall and have long arms you have very little control as the bars are turned from side to side. 2. your hands should not be above your heart for extended periods of time. remember seeing riders at stoplights shaking their hands and arms to get the circulation back. 3. should you drop the bike the leverage of the long bar allows it to bend or break off easier than a short bar.

I would recommend going with a set of 10 inch wide glide mini apes this way if they don,t sit just right it would be cheaper to change the length of the risers then having to by a new set of bars. Don,t use anything longer than 6 inch with the risers. The other problem with using fixed risers is you can't adjust them forwards or backwards

Have a look at http://www.jirehcycles.com/ and check out their handle bars, I just got a set of 16 inch apes for $30 dollars ,not a bad price and if you don't like em it sure is a hell of a lot cheaper to swap back. I had a new braided brake line made and got some new throttle cables. extented the wiring,[note; you might know this, but DO NOT cut the wires all at the same length, stagger the cuts and solder them and shrink wrap em}I used some 1 inch risers , also at Jireh .good luck

I'm kinda late responding but I took it personal about having your hands above your heart and other such crap. If you're that infirm you shouldn't be on two wheels. I've had apes on all my bikes for the last 20 years. I just put a set of 16" on my Roadking and it stopped the heart Level bars from puncturing my lungs on a tight turn. It also gives better leverage. If you need a state to ride in Pennsy has no helmet law and no heighth restrictions on bars - If you want you can make them high enough that you have to stand up on your floor boards.

Stand up on your floorboards.... hmmmmm.
No monkey butt on long rides!
Easier to use body english on tight turns.
Nevermind bugs in your teeth, bugs in your buttonfly Levis....
Well now, this opens up a whole new style of riding, could be alot of fun!
