| | Ape dynamics Well the snow is here. Time to think about tinkering again. I am seriously considering a set of apes with internal wires, possibly a hydrolic clutch so that cable can go inside as well. What are the dynamics when considering higher bars. I don't want sky scrapers but maybe something a little bigger than the stock bars on the Crossbones. How much width at the base and height should I look for to give a good look but maintain good control?

| | I read some where that its a good idea to not go higher than your shoulders to keep the blood from running from your hands and cause numbness. Just a hint that I picked up on. Good luck on your decision.

That higher than the shoulders tale has been around forever and there actually might be something to it for some folk with less circulation than others,, I never had a prob with it when I ran High..
As far as base width and top width,, you might just look for identical bars that are simply higher, that is, if you are satisfied with the base and top width you have now..
As far as height,, oh baby, knock yersef out, have a ball.. You might end up experimenting with a couple diff bars, could be expensive, but that's the only way you'll find what is right for you.. Remember cable lengths..!!
I now run shoulder height to avoid the law..
I once got 4, yes, four handle-bar height tickets from the same cop in THREE stops..
Took it to court and beat him and he got a reprimand from the judge for possible harrasment-- Plus the judge told him to never bring handle-bar height tickets to his court again,, cool huh.. Yeah baby..

| | I will take your advice on width Frisco I do like what I have now. Some of the baby apes look to narrow for my taste. I think I'll go between 12 and 14 inches high, slightly over legal here but probably not enough to draw attention/tickets. The stock bars with the four inch risers run just over 10. Any suggestions on brand names. Man the price range runs from cheap through stupid. I want quality, the idea of bars bending in my hands doesn't appeal to me, but I don't want to spend for the sake of spending either.

I would guess that if a Co. made their bars outa some kinda cheap Chinese rejected metal it wouldn't be good but I doubt anything like that exists..
I have Never known/heard of anybody having bars bend easily by hand..
Bars are bars, kinda like Salt is always Sodium-Chloride no matter what brand you buy..
Flanders has been around for freakin years and prob is the benchmark for bars and totally normal priced..
If you get the extra wide OD heavy bars all you'll have is more weight on the front end with no advantage what-so-ever to you or the sickle.. Totally for looks and it looks stupid..
Have a ball buddy..

| | The great thing about big apes is that it gives you that "Rocky The Flying Squirrel" look. |

| | Question #1: Why the price differnce between Flanders and KW? I know both are solid names... so why the steep price increase?
Question #2: Would I have to buy new cables if I were to go from stock FXDB bars (10.?? rise) to bars with a 12" rise?

| | I think I found em. Take a look at the cover of the March issue. I just dragged the mag in through the snow and there they were sitting on that Sucker Punch Sally Daytona bike. Clean, atractive nice lines not too wide. Tech sheet says they are Custom Chrome 12 inch. Off to their web site I go for a closer look and price.
