Default Fork Oil

I have a Fat Boy and a '04 Big Dog Mastiff. I need to replace the fork oil on the Big Dog but have no instructions for that in my manual. I believe I have to remove the front wheel to drain the oil out and I think I have to remove the large bolts on top of the forks to put the new oil in, but I'm not sure and need some help. Thanks, Mr. Mike

You're on the right track

1- get the right for oil. Ask Big Dog

2- that big bolt on top? it may be clamped, need to loosen the top of your tree sometimes.

3- that big bolt on top? it's a cap, with a long and strong spring under there. Be careful.

4- do one side, then the other.

5- pull the top first and use a wire like a dipstick to verify proper oil level. Match it when you refill.

Be careful

I would get your front wheel off the ground to release pressure on the fork springs. This will prevent your caps from imbedding in the ceiling when you lossen them. Also makes it easier to screw the caps back down. Make sure you put in equal amounts of fluid on both sides. Find out how much fluid you are suppose to put back in. Wet or Dry fork? Dry if take it apart and clean it up. That will usally take a ounce or so more.

Look at your fluid when you drain it out. If its dirty lookin or has lots of bubbles in it you will need to replace your seals. Its a good indication water got in.

Just be real careful when you loosen the caps. Dont have your face over them.
