Default Shovel Books

I ride an '80 FXWG and I am just really getting into doing all my own work to it. Until now I have had to rely on others to hold my hand and walk me through all my rebuilds and even minor work. I was just lucky enough to meet a guy with another 80 FXWG basket case and him and I are going to build it together and so I find myself in need of some minor 'book learning' knowledge. Like torque specs on valve lash and that sort of needed info.

What manuals and books would people here in the know recommend? Additionally if someone has the sorts of books I need for sale or just kicking around, please let me know what you want for 'em and we will work something out.

Thanks in advance.

(I just finished welding the frame into what I want. A sort of Paugco / FXWG personal design. I cannot wait to get it together and see what I come up with on my very 1st ever build.)

Get the HD shop manual if you can. I don't know if the dealers can still get them or not. If that fails Haynes makes a good manual. Also available fmom Easyriders is "Tech Tips and Tricks". They have 4 books in the series to cover various engines, one of them will address your Shovel.

Be cautious of the "Tech Tips-n-Tricks" books. Not all of the info actually works.

Default books of knowledge

Absolutely. A factory manual gives you all the basics you need and don't be affraid to read the chapter your looking at two or three times I'm not kidding it's never as simple as it sounds also try to get your hand's on a parts manual, with older bikes the OEM number is an invaluable tool when ordering after market parts [ as the factory has probablly stoped making most all of them] they always seem to say "replaceses OEM part #" ...check these numbers. to save having to send them back and waiting another week to continue your build. Next find an old "motor head"
and you'll never need to buy another "tricked-out" book again, most of them are more than happy to impart thier well earned knowledge, just remember they expect you to use the advice. or don't bother going back.

Keep checking e bay for a service manual. I've still got my old "78 1/2 thru 80" HD service manual, and that's what I would search for.
Good luck, see ya on the road.
