Default sidewall splitting on avon rear tire

I am not sure but I think I was ripped off when my tire blew a few months back in a town I was not familiar with. I got an avon tyre put on my rear wheel and only have 2500 miles on the tire. Today I noticed that there is significant sidewall splitting and I know this is not supposed to happen. I would appreciate any feedback on this issue. Also, what is the best tire to put on I have used Dunlops and from what I can tell Avons dont even fit the bike properly. Thanks!

Often a lot of sidewall issues on any MC tire have to do with under inflation. Metzeler was having similar problems a while back and the cure was to run higher pressure than what had been run with the OEM tires. Check out Avon's website and see what pressure they recommend for your tire, your bike, and your conditions. The Metzelers on my bike (an FXR4) are recommended by Metzeler to run about 8-10 lbs. more pressure, both front and rear, than what HD recommends. That's a lot. I think the newer style tires have a different sidewall construction from the OEM Dunlops. Look for Avon's "fitment" pages on their site.

Good Luck

Default sidewall splitting

Took care of sidewall splitting today after I got mechanic at the shop to look at the tire. My mechanic told me that tires today aren't always built as strongly as american brands and that I should be more vigilant in checking tire pressure. I used to check twice a week, so, I will start checking before every ride from now on to be safe. Thanks for the advice everybody! Ride free Ride hard Ride safe!
