Default Thanks for all the help here, but tell me what you think

Well I've took everyones thoughts on this forum and a few know-it-all's that I know for a great upgrade for my 2003 sportster, but I need a bit more help!!! Well heres what I have so far.

1) Andrews Cams N2 (for 2000-2006 stock Sporty's) $314.95
2) Buell Thunderstorm High Flow Cylinder Heads With 0.005" oversized Pistons $634.95
3) S&S Super E carb kit $429.99
4) Mechine work $100.00
5) Vance and Hines Straight Shots pipes $349.95
6) Dyno $200.00 for up to 10 runs, and $250.00 for over to whatever it takes

My Grandpa's giving me $2,000.00 for some upgrades for my 03' Sporty for going back to High School and finishing it up. So far this set up would be about $2,029.89 + Tax. I will have about $400.00 to $800.00 to mess around with for the rest. But my delima is what ign. should I use for this set-up? Tell me what you think of this set-up.

If I seen your last posts you have a 883 Correct? Converting to a 1200?

What are you trying to accomplish? Speed off the line? More Midrange torque? A bigger boost at top end? All around solid motor?

The N2's are a decent not over aggressive cam. Okay all around. You loose a little Midrange.

Thunderstorms are a good choice. Going to get em Ported and Polished? Valve job?

You getting new jugs or are you going to machine the old? Just as cheap to get new ones. Unless you do the machine work yourself.

The stock CV carb should be just fine with a jet change and slide kit. Your Motor will not use the full potential of the SS super E. You will also have to come up with a new Intake manifold.

Dont forget all the gaskets.

I would skip the dyno also. Waste of Money unless you need every last ounce.

Really need to know what you want out of your bike.

Well I'm really just looking for a good all around motor that has power when needed. Yes, its a 883 that I want to convert to a 1200. And the mechine work price is just off the top of my head, might be cheaper considering my dads been friends with him for like 30 years. The heads will be ported and polished if I can afford to do it. If you would please give me some ideas on some upgrades that will be under $2,800.00. And thank you for helping me on my problem.

Duffman:
Here you go. I converted my 04 sporty from an 883 to a 1200. Parts are similar to what I used. This setup should give you another 20 Horse/ torque. You will beat a stock 1200 off the line! It is durable tried and true. I have put 20,000 on mine after the conversion. No issues. Good all around Performance. You will notice a big difference (Seat of the Pants) from your stock 883.

My Best Bang for the Buck!

All parts from Harley Davidson.

You will be using your same 883 Heads. No modifications. This will save you a ton of dough.

Part#16554-92A A pair of 1200 Jugs. 139.95 Ea.

Part#22698-01 A set of SE 10:1 Conversion Pistons 279.95 a pair.

Part#25648-01 SE cams 274.95 the Set

Part#32979-98A SE ignition Module. 119.95
This retards timing and allows you to rev to 6800 RPM.

Part#29041-88B SE High Flow Air Cleaner 79.95
If you aint already got one.

Total=$ 1034.70

Now you can add on your pipes, Gaskets, Jets.

You can bore out your jugs if in good shape and shave a Hundred bucks. then add Labor if not doing yourself.

Note: Prices may have changed. Also verify Part #’s just in case I hosed one up.

That is ALMOST the set-up I went with... but I added Buell Thunderstorm heads and pistons. You will NOT be disappointed. My old bike would scream!

Check out http://www.bishopsperformance.com/sportster.htm for some good dyno charts. Aw, screw it. I'll attach one:

John 1:14

It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the LORD.

Best kept secret is an 883 with stock 883 heads and after market relieved pistons in new 1200 jugs. I built one of these a few years back and it was a BIG TWIN eater, Loads of fun. The small valve heads are GREAT on the street. The stock Keihn carb is made by Honda and WILL support up to about 100 HP. Also, damn hard to beat stock Harley Sporty cams for the street. Also the stock pipes are tuned really well for that engine. Just bolt your favorite mufflers on it or hole saw the rear baffle out of the stockers, Good sound and GREAT "Ride-ability". If you feel you MUST spend $$ on Muffs, get the Cycle shack muffs. They MAKE the Screamin Eagle muffs for Harley and sound really good.

Have fun, but put some of your windfall away for tomorrow.

Steel.. "last longer and be a lot more dependable?"

I agree and disagree. Use the correct parts when you up the ponies and dont go overboard should last as long as a stock Bike.

To beat or not to beat the bike??? How are you taking care of it all factor in.

IMO Hot Rod Bikes and Cars are for the strip where you can run em wide open without getting locked up or pissing off the town folk.

I see no problem in enhancing a stock bike to make it a little more responsive.

Well here is the latest news on the bike, just cut the baffles out. Halfway cleaned the carb out, new air filter, new dot 5 brake fluid, new screaming eagle 20W-50 primary oil, and right now im sitting at 1900 miles and im changing the oil friday. I put Amsoil 20W-50 in it and a H-D oil filter. Gunna maintain the oil every 2500 miles or so, fixing to get me a sissy bar for the G-F, she complains she thinks she is going to fall off of it. Just ordered a Oil cooler for it with a cut off for cold days. And ya, I dont need it that loud, the neighbors and cops are asses. Got the 2,000.00 from my grandpa but most was spent for a new 700R4 tranny for my 91' Chevy. Now I have like 500.00 left.
