Tschmidtgal, trailer sway, or waging the tail of the dog is usually caused by to little weight on the tongue.
You should have at least ten percent of the trailer weight on the hitch.
Never balance the trailer so that there is no tongue weight, (Neutral balance).
When I am building a trailer I like to set the axle at sixty/forty. That or build the bed, then balance the bed to get the correct balance, and then set the axle.
Then just make sure when you load it to put the weight in accordingly.
Better to have too much tongue weight than to little.
By adding a longer tongue you have changed the balance of the trailer, you have added tongue weight.

I removed the original tongue, which was 50" long and replaced it with a 70" tongue. The reason I did that was because of sway. It now has virtually no sway at 95mph. I don't go that fast but wanted to know what the limit was.
I am about two to three weeks away from announcing who and where you can get a hitch for the 04 or later sportsters. |
