Default Sportster exhaust

Hi,

I'm riding a 09 sportster 883 - R. I realise that my ride exhaust have a o2 sensor. Does modifying the stock exhaust (to make it louder) affect the O2 sensor or the overall performance of the ride? Or it does not matter at all?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum,Taccman. Changing the exhaust on your Sportster won't disrupt the function of the O2 sensors, in fact they will allow the EFI to compensate for the exhaust change.
The less restrictive exhaust may improve the performance of you bike a very small amount. The main thing will be a more pleasant sound. To achieve any real power increase you need to go with a lower restriction air cleaner. An internal combustion engine is basically an air pump, more air through the engine = more power. To get more air the restriction must be reduced at both ends, intake and exhaust. Ride safe and God bless, Sincerely: Shovelmike.

Just as Shovelmike was saying, you may as well go ahead and put the stage 1 a/c setup on the bike at the same time as exhaust changes are done. You will notice a difference when they are done The stage 1 setup is about $150 and they will have to remap your injection system. May as well do it all at the same time. You know , the old "do it once, do it right" thing!

I have a buddy that drilled out his baffles and the EGT temp was out of the roof, the pipe on the rear was glowing cherry red, he ran to put on a race tuner abd change the mapping.

That's my BIGGEST worry too. Hear about the O2 sensor thing causing BIG problem to people modifying the stock pipes.

Thinking about getting the slip on from Vance and Hines. Any comments or recommendations?

There are lots of good slip on's out there, it just comes down to the look and sound you want. Search online and you can save quite a bit of money. If you have any mechanical aptitude at all install the a/c and slip on's yourself then add a Power Commander. You can download maps from their website. Much better than paying the dealers labor rate and their expensive download or the race tuner and all that they will charge to set it up right.

as far as how it affects performance i dont know but i have vance and hines shortshots on my 06 1200 and they do provide mounting hardware for o2 senors for the newer models. If you like me and like them loud i recommend the the V&H short shots

Although V&H are pricey, I have always been happy with the performance (the little you get out of exhaust) and have always liked the growl. There not over bearing.

Yes.. V&H is quite pricey. Just hope the price is worth the value.
