Default 98 1200 won't go into gear

I have a 98 1200 custom, it won't go into gear. Sounds as if the gears are not lined up properly and are not engaging. Doesn't go into any gear. I have the primary cover off. Any help on what to look for would be appreciated, Thanx, Steve R.

Get a service manual & perform the shift pawl adjustment.

Ace, Thanx for the tip. Is that something that would go out of adjustment over time? I have the left side cover off thinking it was something on that side. Is there anything I should replace on the left side now that I have the cover off? I do have the service manual. I would say I'm a novice mechanic and new to Motorcycles. Is this something I should attempt or should I take it to HD dealer to have done, Steve R.

Problem was bad shifter drum and detent plate. Replaced with Baker parts. Shifts alot smoother. Mechanic recommended Baker parts over HD oem parts. All good to go now.
