I think my other lift is a Direct Lift,,... and I topped it with a sheet of 3/4" plywood 40" wide so I can work on riding lawn mowers, and the golf cart too... you oughta see that bike lift with the golf cart on it.....
I like the solid deck and use a scissor jack to lift the bike away from the tire like Evo mntioned... it seems like there is more control.

Love the home made lifts. I know a guy on the big dog site that made a killer one using a bottle jack.
I have a direct lift with all the bells/whistles. I even added one more with the condor over the wheel clamp. The lift is hands down the best garage tool I have ever purchased.
It comes like this
To this
With the condor
Got a bunch of money wrapped up in it now. The lift with the side extensions, chopper extensions, dolly, drop tail, and 2 scissor jacks, delivered was about $1100. Then about another $350 or so for the chopper condor and extra cradle so I can do skinny and fat front tires.
Nice bike Gas Man, I love the sissy bar, it looks hazardous to elbows etc, if you dont pay attention when you walk by it.
I now have a new lift too. with the tire chock from...yeah I know....harbor freight...... but since I am a welder/fabricator, all I need is the basic modle and then I can make it better, or make another one from that sample. I also went cheep on the wide table, I used a sheet of 3/4" plywood. I even get the golf cart up on the lift to work on it!!!
The old home made one is out by the barn.... I may hafta go rescue it and beef it up some and use it again.
Heres the lift, with a honda chop I'm working on....slowly.....

Thanks for the bar compliments. My bud Eric from Choppin' Steel made it. Sold bar steel stock, hand bent. He is amazing. He also worked with me on my design of my one off pipes for the chop. I wish I had a 1/10th of his metal skills.
wish i could weld so that I could build me a lift like yours unc. let me know if your homemade one ever goes up for sale I'll buy it...need it for my first build...doin it all by myself
If you spent $200 at Harbor Freight (yeah I know) for a little 110 volt Mig welder, and just practice until you get it... I could draw up the plans, and send that to you (free to forum members). You probly already have a floor jack, so the only real expense would be the welder, and there are some in-expensive ones out there. Only reason I suggest a cheep welder is cuz we aint all got $700 for a Lincoln or Miller. The Mig is easy to learn, just point and pull the trigger... play with the adjustments untill it starts working right.
You might even be able to rent a welder, a good welder for a few bucks over the weekend. Once all the pipe is cut and notched, It would only take a couple hours to weld.
What part of the country are you in?

I got myself a lift from Norco a few years ago for about $450.
Picks the bike up like a fork lift, leaving the wheels hanging.
Did the Harbor Freight thing and bought a $60 wheel chock to hold the bike straight up making it a little easier having the kick stand up.
Couldn't resist sending in a pic of my ultra/super-duty ATV/Bike lift from the local crappy tire outlet. Killed me to fork out the $80.00 (on sale) loonies, a few years ago, but like everyone...ya gotta invest in the future of any build, regardless of tools or easing the back pain (when hunched over something). Little did I know, some of the "specialty" tools one needs (other than the one's you beg/borrow or steal), would surpass the lift cost! 48 Panchops do have some interesting things on them i.e. cone nuts....all good stuff, eh?
